CEDAR ISLAND BEACONS
Cedar Island Mark, K1MAP, has activated two VHF beacons, one on 144.282
MHz, signing W4FWS; the other on 222.055 MHz, K1MAP. They should be in
operation for the next two months. Although the antennas are not turned
directly toward Pamlico County, those with the proper equipment are
likely to hear them. If you do, Mark would appreciate reception reports.
Please send them to Mark Casey at map92map@gmail.com.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reports that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 4 p.m. local. The Space Weather Prediction Center
expects solar activity to be moderate today through Wednesday with a
chance for X-class flares. Radio blackouts reaching the R2 (10’s of
minutes) level are likely on the sunlit Earth.
There are 11 numbered sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth this
morning. There were 6 last Monday, 6 the Monday before.
Sunday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was 203,
last Sunday’s was 231. The index is predicted to measure 205 today, 210
Tuesday and 210 on Wednesday. The much more important SFI 90 day
trailing average was 207 yesterday. It was 218 last Sunday.
The geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. The SWPC expects the field to
be quiet today, Tuesday and on Wednesday. The planetary K-index at 7
a.m. this morning was 2.33 indicating quiet conditions.
Propagation is expected to be about the same as last week: poor during
the day on 80 to 40, fair to good at night; good day and night on 30 to
15; and good day, poor night on 12 and 10M. Go to
https://www.n4prs.org/looking-up/ for the latest observations. 6 meters
has slowed down with fewer openings to Europe and to South America…
keep checking!

–WANTED: about 100′ of coax. RG-8 type preferred, but RG-8X is
acceptable. Used is OK. This is for one of my Technician students that
has a 2-meter rig that he wants to listen to, and eventually use to
access local repeaters. Old used cable is preferred as we will measure
its attenuation and adjust transmitter power accordingly as a hands-on
learning experience. Failing a 100′ piece we can splice a few shorter
pieces, again measuring attenuation, etc. So if you have some old cable
lying around give me a call or email. Bill Michne, WM3X, 252-671-6703,
