ALL QUIET…
before the storm. No new club news to report. The forecast for today and
Tuesday is that it will be wet and windy. Good days to stay inside. Play
radio if you can. Monitor the Oriental repeater if it gets nasty.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reports that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. The Space Weather Prediction Center
expects solar activity to be moderate today through Wednesday with a
slight chance–a 10 to 15% chance–for X-class flares. Radio blackouts
reaching the R1 level (minutes) are likely.
There are 5 numbered sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth this
morning. There were 11 last Monday, 10 the Monday before.
Sunday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was 173,
last Sunday’s was 228. The index is predicted to measure 175 today, 170
Tuesday and 170 on Wednesday. The much more important SFI 90 day
trailing average was 217 yesterday. It was 215 last Sunday. Expect it to
drop.
The geomagnetic field was quiet to active yesterday. The SWPC expects
the field to reach severe storm levels today when the Earth will be
grazed by a large CME, reach major storm levels Tuesday and then be
quiet or unsettled on Wednesday. (An X.5 flare over the mid- Atlantic
Ocean on Saturday around 11:29am local generated the CME. If you were on
the HF bands then, you would have noticed the blackout caused by the
flare.) The planetary K-index at 5 a.m. this morning was 4.0 indicating
unsettled conditions.
Expect propagation to be poor during the day on 80 to 40, fair at night;
good on 30 to 15; and good day, poor night on 12 and 10M. Go to
https://www.n4prs.org/looking-up/ for the latest observations.
