HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR DXING DURING THE SOLAR MAX:
A PARS ZOOM VIDEO CONFERENCE
Bill Schrader, K2TNO, has arranged for Frank Donovan, W3LPL,
acknowledged expert on the Sun and its effects on Radio Propagation, to
give PARS members and their friends a special presentation on DXing
during the Solar Maximum. An inveterate DXer and contester, he shares
his knowledge through a daily propagation forecast for the Potomic
Valley Radio Club (PVRC) and others world wide. The live presentation
will allow for a period of open discussion and questions. Hosted by
Bill, this special Zoom session is set for 8:00pm – 9:30pm EDT on
Wednesday, August 21st. It will follow the regular Pamlico Emergency Net
Wednesday practice. Invitation details:

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reports that solar activity was moderate during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. The Space Weather Prediction Center
expects solar activity to be moderate today through Wednesday with a 30%
chance for X-class flares. Radio blackouts at the R2 level are expected.
There are 11 numbered sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth this
morning. There were 10 last Monday, 10 the Monday before.
Sunday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was 282,
last Sunday’s was 241. The index is predicted to measure 280 today, 270
Tuesday and 270 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was 200
yesterday. It was 194 last Sunday.
The geomagnetic field reached minor storm levels yesterday. The SWPC
expects the field to reach minor storm levels today, be quiet to active
Tuesday and then quiet on Wednesday. Geomagnetic storms reaching the G3
level are expected. The planetary K-index at 5 a.m. this morning was 7.0
indicating stormy (G2 level) conditions. [That said, N5J, the DXpedition
on Jarvis Isl was heard here S4Q4 on 14.220 MHz at 0700 this morning and
just earlier worked easily on 40M FT8 Super Fox.–ed.]
Today, propagation is expected to be generally poor during geomagnetic
storms. After they clear, during the day, fair to good at night on 80 to
20; good on 17 and 15, and good day, poor night on 12 and 10M. Go to
https://www.n4prs.org/looking-up/ for the latest observations.
