WHERE IS SHE NOW? EASTERN EXPRESS DAY 81 (or so)

Well, just like the Beatles classic, the Eastern Express is “Back in the

USSR”! Actually, the most recent spots on Saturday evening placed her in

the North Eastern District of Siberia above the northernmost reaches of

the Sea of Okhotsk. She has made a big loop since last Monday when she

was just below Attu Station. She moved swiftly east toward the Yukon,

then northwest, spent some time over Anchorage, then back to Siberia. At

a high latitude with few tracker reports heard, her exact route is not

known. Matt, WU2V, wonders if she will unwind the string. A tough little

balloon she is.

WHAT ABOUT WAVING OUR CROAKER IN THE BIG PARADE?

Our fantastic website editor and expert maker of things, Paul,K4MMB,

sent me a note Sunday, in part about PARS representation in the

Croakerfest Parade. Here’s what he said… “I was curious if anyone is

interested in having the Webpage Tractor in the Crokerfest again?   The

long and short of it is no one actually asked me to do any of it [in the

past].  At the time it was a way to pay it forward.  Just wondering if

it is still of interest?”

“I will feature “Craig the Croaker” radio fish and add to the sign so as

people ask about the club besides the website.  Jane tells me the sign

just doesn’t prompt people to ask about an amateur club.  I have to

agree.   It will take some work to fix or re-letter the sign so I’m

dragging my feet unless you think it’s all worth it.   Maybe you can

pool the crowd for a couple of days and get some feedback I need to move

on things soon in order to make it.”

“Also I could use one VHF radio as the tractor unit did not survive the

downpour during the 125th Birthday parade.   Can’t use a hand held so an

old analog mobile mount does the trick.”

So folks, what do you think? Please get up with Paul, an email to

PARSwebman@gmail.com will do.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY

NOAA reports that solar activity was moderate during the 24 hour period

ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. The Space Weather Prediction Center

expects solar activity to be moderate again today and tomorrow with a

chance for M and X-class flares. Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level

are expected. Low activity is expected on Wednesday. There are 10

numbered sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth this morning. There

were 9 last Monday, 7 the Monday before.

Sunday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was 181,

last Sunday’s was 180. The index is predicted to measure 175 today, 170

Tuesday and 170 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was 174

yesterday. It was 170 last Sunday.

The geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. The SWPC expects the field to

reach major storm levels today, reach minor storm levels tomorrow, then

be quiet to unsettled on Wednesday. The planetary K-index at 8 a.m. this

morning was 1.33 indicating quiet conditions.

For the next several days, propagation is expected to be poor to fair

during the day, good at night on 80 to 20; good on 17 and 15, and good

day, poor night on 12 and 10M. Over the weekend, the ARRL June VHF

contest brought out the players. At times the FT8 waterfall on 6 meters

was full of signals, some very strong. Lots of tropo, considerable

amount of 1,000 mile E layer skip.

excellent article written by Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA at
