DID YOU FEEL IT?
If you do and even if you don’t, there’s going to be a big EARTHQUAKE on
Thursday October 19th at 10:19 am (1419Z). It’s the Great ShakeOut
Exercise and we all get a chance to report it to the USGS via WinLink.
WinLink users send a “Did-You-Feel-It” form report (Standard Templates,
USGS, USGS DYFI txt) within an hour of 10:19 am on Thursday or whenever
later that day.
Lor Kutchins, W3QA, writes:”For those who think there is no earthquakes
in NC, we’re not immune. Here is the history of them in NC, including
one last year in Beaufort County!
https://ncdenr.maps.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/8e85c4cbca9e4e738b95be875fd2feae”
He adds: “And, this year FEMA and many other agencies are participating
and looking at Winlink as a tool for ‘ground truth reporting’” “…this
is the best opportunity ham radio has had in the last 20 years to
demonstrate to emergency management across the US what a resource
amateur radio can be (and is). I don’t mind if you quote me!”
“Info is at https://winlink.org/content/Great_Shakeout where a PDF can
be downloaded with step-by-step instructions for a ham to participate.
Registering at the USGS web site gets the participant a nice certificate.”
BIT BUCKET
– Pamlico Communications Team. The RFI detection/remediation
presentation scheduled for the November 4th meeting will be deferred to
December. Not to worry, it will still be an interesting meeting. We
always learn something new.
– The Oriental Repeater Group advises that network connectivity work is
ongoing. The Arapahoe VHF repeater was briefly taken off-line overnight
last Thursday to connect the digital side to the NC4ES EHPC network for
initial testing. The testing was successful although longer term testing
is warranted. With the Kershaw repeater down for controller repairs, the
Arapahoe VHF repeater was reactivated on Friday morning. As networking
efforts continue, the group will make every effort to keep at least one
of the local VHF repeaters operational. If Arapahoe is not up, please
switch to the Oriental repeater and vice versa.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reports that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period

Today and tomorrow, propagation is expected to be fair on the 80 through

both day and night are expected for 17 and 15 meter bands. Ten and 12
should be fair during the day, poor at night. No matter the prediction,
get on the air and you will make contacts.
