SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reports that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 6 p.m. local. The Space Weather Prediction Center
expects solar activity to be low today through Wednesday. Although
activity may be low, there a is chance for M-class flares each day. One
erupted early this morning at 0128Z–an M1.3-class flare. There are 9
numbered sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth this morning. There
were 5 last Monday, 5 the Monday before.
Sunday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was 164.
Last Sunday’s was 131. The index is predicted to measure 160 today, 155
Tuesday and 155 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was 162
yesterday. It was 163 last Sunday.
The geomagnetic field was quiet Sunday. The SWPC expects conditions to
be quiet to unsettled today and then quiet to active Tuesday and
Wednesday. The planetary K-index at 5 am this morning was 1.67
indicating quiet conditions.
Today and tomorrow, propagation is expected to be poor on 80 through 20
during the day, good at night. Good conditions during both day and night
are expected for 17 and 15 meter bands. Ten and 12 should be good during
the day, poor at night.
The ARRL September VHF contest this weekend brought life to the 6 meter
band. DXmaps reported a long list of E-layer skip, TEP and tropo FT8
contacts as the contest was nearing its end Sunday night. At 10 pm most
of the activity was in the eastern half of the US extending to the
south, well into South America.
