THE BIT BUCKET

* If you haven’t lately, you might want to spend a couple of minutes to

check out the PARS Web site www.n4prs.org. Paul has put up some more

good stuff. On the “Editor’s Page” he muses on the dog days of summer

and things ham radio. A news flash appears on the “What’s Happening”

page. It’s a write up on Dick Goodwin’s 13 Colonies Special Event

all-bands all-modes clean-sweep award presentation complete with a big

smile photo. And the in the “Log Book” is a report on the “Mysteries

Unraveled” by Dr. Bill Michne at our June meeting. Again, more photos.

Yep, there’s more on the PARS website than repeater frequencies and old

PARSgrams.

* At the Pamlico Communications Team gathering on Saturday, who would

have thought a logging program would have generated so much discussion?

The logger was built by Wayne, KO4OJC. It can assist PARS’ net

controllers keep track and keep the net orderly. Then, somehow,

conversation drifted to the Aug 23 RATPAC presentation regarding pending

Federal antenna legislation that will offer–finally–HOA restriction

relief. The presenters revealed some antenna options that are available

now. The next PCT meeting will focus on radio noise detection, finding,

and clearing. All are welcome.

* BTW and thanks to the reminder Mr. Olah, RATPAC stands for “Radio

Amateur Training Planning Activities Committee” (www.ratpac.us) and is a

remarkable resource. The committee produces Zoom presentations weekly on

general radio topics (Wednesdays) and amateur radio emergency

communications (Thursdays). They are recorded on YouTube

(www.youtube.com/c/RATPAC) and elsewhere. An extensive list of upcoming

and past presentations are at the bottom of the home page–just click on

“YouTube Video” or “Vimeo” to view. Go down the list. There’s even an

Oct 5, 2022 presentation by Matt McMahon, WU2V, on High Altitude

Balloons. Remember back when–for days and days–we tracked the balloon

sent up by Matt and Lor that went around the world and then some…

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY

NOAA reports that solar activity was high during the 24 hour period

ending yesterday at 6 p.m. local. The largest event was a M6 flare at

0436 Sunday morning. The Prediction Center expects solar activity to be

low today through Wednesday. There are 5 numbered sunspot regions on the

Sun facing Earth this morning. There were 5 last Monday, 5 the Monday

before.

Sunday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was 131.

Last Sunday’s was 142. The index is predicted to measure 130 today, 135

Tuesday and 130 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was 163

yesterday. It was 165 last Sunday.

The geomagnetic field reached major storm levels Sunday with a CME and a

solar wind hitting our magnetic field at the same time. The northern

lights were seen over Lake Michigan last night. The SWPC expects

conditions to be quiet to active today and Tuesday and then quiet to

unsettled Wednesday. The planetary K-index at 5 am this morning was 2.00

indicating quiet conditions.

Today and tomorrow, propagation is expected to be fair on 80 through 20

during the day, good at night. Good conditions during both day and night

are expected for the 30, 20, 17 and 15 meter bands. Ten and 12 should be

fair during the day, poor at night.

For an explanation of the numbers used in our PARSgram, see the

excellent article written by Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA at
