2023 THIRTEEN COLONIES SPECIAL EVENT

Dick Goodwin, K4JJW, talked about this annual special event at our last

PARS meeting. Already underway, here’s your opportunity to get in on the

fun. The announcement from the June 28th ARRL Letter: “The Annual 13

Colonies Special Event will take place on July 1 – 7, 2023. The event

honors the original 13 colonies, US independence, active military

personnel, and veterans. All amateur radio operators are welcome to

participate, including shortwave listeners. Certificates will be

available for all participants. Each US state that was one of the

original 13 colonies has a special call sign. All HF bands will be open,

including the WARC bands (with the exception of 60 meters). Simplex on 2

and 6 meters is encouraged, and 40 – 160 meters is encouraged for

stations on the southeast coast. All modes of operation may be used,

including SSB, CW, RTTY, and digital. The mode of operation is up to the

individual colony/state station. More information is available at the

Annual 13 Colonies Special Event website [ http://www.13colonies.us/

-ed.] and the ARRL website.”

UNCLE SAM FOR PARS at CROAKERFEST

Hope you saw our “Uncle Sam”, Paul – Webmaster – Jodoin K4MMB, driving

the N4PRS.ORG tractor in the big parade Saturday. Paul was later seen

operating his “Crokerfest Event Station” and talking up ham radio from

his Jeep, “Lil’ Shaky”. To avoid the powerlines but braving possible

heat-stroke, he was parked in the blazing sun just beyond the kid’s rock

climbing wall. What a guy! Thanks Paul!

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY

NOAA reports that solar activity was moderate during the 24 hour period

ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. An M2 flare was the largest of the

period. Then last evening at 7:14 sunspot region AR3354 exploded giving

off a X1-class flare causing a deep radio blackout over the western

parts of North America and into the Pacific. The R3 outage lasted more

than 30 minutes according to spaceweather.com.

There are 7 numbered sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth this

morning. There were 13 last Monday, 7 the Monday before. The Prediction

Center expected solar activity to continue to be moderate through

Wednesday with a 55% chance for M-class flares and a 10% chance for

X-class flares each day.

Sunday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was 170.

Last Sunday’s was 155. The index is predicted to measure 170 today, 170

Tuesday and 165 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was 156

yesterday. It was 154 last Sunday.

The geomagnetic field was quiet Sunday. Conditions are expected to be

quiet today then quiet to unsettled on Tuesday and on Wednesday. The

planetary K-index at 5 am this morning was 1.33 indicating quiet conditions.

For the next few days, HF conditions are expected to be poor on 80

through 20 during the day, good at night. The best conditions during

both day and night should be found on the 17 and 15 meter bands. Twelve

and 10 meters should be good during the day, poor at night. Six meter

openings should continue. DXmaps was still showing coast to coast

multi-hop E-layer skip contacts as I write this at 10pm.

For an explanation of the numbers used in our PARSgram, see the

excellent article written by Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA at
