SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reports that solar activity was high during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. There are 8 numbered sunspot regions
on the Sun facing Earth this morning. There were 7 last Monday, 6 the
Monday before. The Prediction Center expects solar activity to be
moderate today through Wednesday. There is a 30% chance for X-class and
75% chance for M-class flares each day. Radio blackouts on the sunlit
side of the Earth are likely.
Yesterday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was
- Last Sunday’s was 154. The index is predicted to measure 160 today,
155 tomorrow and 150 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was
153 yesterday. It was 156 last Monday.
The geomagnetic field reached major storm levels (G2) yesterday.
Conditions are expected to reach major storm levels again today, reach
minor storm levels tomorrow and then be unsettled or at minor storm
levels on Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 3.00 reported at 5 a.m.
local this morning indicates quiet geomagnetic conditions.
In the near term, HF conditions are expected to be generally poor on the
lower bands, 80 through 20, during the day, fair at night. The best
conditions during the day and night are likely to be found on the 17 and
15 meter bands. Twelve and 10 meters should be good during the day, poor
at night. Six meters was open in Europe this morning. Check for NA
activity mid-day.
