PARSgram 2022-11-14

BIT BUCKET

*  At our October PARS meeting, Dick, K4JJW, mentioned he found helpful

hints for his new IC-7610 in a “Radio Today” manual and there are

manuals for other transceivers. This week, Mike, K4NLC, sent along a

pointer to https://qrzcq.com/pub/RADIO_MANUALS There you will find

manuals for many new and older transceivers and more.

*  On last Saturday, members of the Oriental Repeater Group assembled at

the new Arapahoe repeater site to take it off the grid.  Lor W3QA, Bill

KR4LO, Mike K4NLC and Bruce K4ONC in three hours time assembled the

various components to put the new Arlington repeater (described in last

week’s special PARSgram) on more reliable solar power. Photos of their

effort will soon be on our web site, www.n4prs.org.

*  The 2022 PARS Fox Hunt is coming soon–on Saturday December 3rd at

10:30 am through 2:15 pm in Oriental to be exact.  It will be a two hour

timed event.  The meeting place will be at the Oriental Volunteer Fire

Station 19 on Straight Road near the intersection with NC 55. If you

want to play, contact Dick, K4JJW, soon, he needs to know. We understand

hamburgers/hot dogs will be served after the hunt.

*  JARSFEST is coming up next Sunday, November 20th, at the American

Legion Building in Benson, NC. It’s only a two hour drive from Oriental.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY

NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period

ending yesterday at 4 p.m. local. There are 4 numbered sunspot regions

on the Sun facing Earth this morning. There were 6 last Monday. The

Prediction Center expects solar activity to be low today through

Wednesday. M-class flares, even an X-class flare, are possible.

At noon yesterday, the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was

  1. Last Sunday it was 131. The index is predicted to measure 135 at

noon today and noon tomorrow and 120 on Wednesday noon. The SFI 90 day

trailing average was 132 yesterday, creeping up one from last Sunday.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled yesterday. It is

expected to be quiet today, quiet to unsettled tomorrow and on

Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 2 reported at 7 a.m. local this

morning indicated quiet geomagnetic conditions.

We can expect fair to good operating conditions on the HF bands 80

through 15, fair day and poor night on 12 and 10 meters.
