OL’ FRONT PORCH MUSIC FESTIVAL- PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN
From Bruce, K4ONC–
PARS has been asked by the organizers of the Ol’ Front Porch Music
Festival to help make this popular event safe for our visitors and
performers. The festival is on Friday and Saturday, September 30th and
October 1st, with live music venues on porches scattered along streets
closest to the river in Oriental. Most activity will be near Lou Mac
Park. Growing larger each year, this Musicfest has become extremely
popular and draws visitors from near and far. Thousands are expected to
attend. We are scheduled to work “closed road barricades”, guiding
perfomers and visitors and coordinating with the festival staff via our
radios, on Friday the 30th only, from about 10am to 7pm.
With only 8 volunteers so far, we need more to man the 6 locations
through the day.
ALL volunteers are invited to an orientation meeting on Saturday, Sept
24th, 10 am in the Fellowship Hall at the Oriental United Methodist
Church, 404 Freemason Street. At that time the event organizers will go
over all the plans and answer any and all questions. If you are unable
to attend, please advise me and I will pass all pertinent information to
you. Since the monthly PARS meeting has been moved to October 1st, there
should not be any conflict with the orientation.
On Sunday, Oct 2nd at 3pm there will be a “Volunteer Appreciation Pizza
Party” at the Red Rooster, behind the Silos Restaurant.
Please contribute some of your valuable time helping to make the Music
Festival a safe and enjoyable event, interact with fellow PARS members
and the community, hear some great music and have fun. To signup please
call Bruce Perkins, K4ONC, at 252-626-2730 or email K4ONC@aol.com.

Small but fun, Maysville is the closest Hamfest to Oriental. Never can
tell who you might run into or what kind of good stuff you might find.
SO WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Bruce, K4ONC, recently heard from Jamie King, KJ4JK, one of our founding
members and a Past President. Here’s Jamie’s note with his email address–

My nerve problem in the legs has gotten predictably worse, and my
mobility is now quite seriously affected. Susan [KI4NSS] is definitely
the doer and go-getter in the family now. There isn’t a lot we have to
do here, as the management takes care of all house and yard maintenance.
I’ve taken on a volunteer job with the statewide “Residents’
Association” as editor/publisher for the organization’s publications
(www.NorCCRA.org), which takes a lot of my time. Susan maintains a
flower garden and two kitchen gardens, along with her watercolor
painting – – and has more caretaking to do as my ability decreases.
I still do a good bit of on-the-air activity, mostly on 75/80 early
mornings. The radio club in the area consists of a bunch of very old
guys (says me, age 89) who don’t actually do much of anything but
complain that the ‘old days’ were better. We have two other ‘hams’ in
the village, but no repeater or much 2m or local activity at all.
AJ4UX lives in the next-door-but-one cottage uphill (to our South) and
he runs the RV net from 7-8 on Tuesdays on 40m. Sometimes I join that
but often we’re at breakfast then.
Not much else to give you. I’m not wheelchair-bound yet but that is
definitely coming.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. There are 7 numbered sunspot regions
on the Sun facing Earth this morning. There were 4 last Monday. The
Prediction Center expects solar activity to continue to be low with a 1
in 5 chance for M-class flares today, tomorrow and Wednesday.
At noon yesterday, the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was
- Last Sunday it was 128. The index is predicted to measure 150 at
noon today, then 148 Tuesday and 143 Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing
average was 123 yesterday up one from last Sunday.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled yesterday. It
should be quiet today, quiet to unsettled Tuesday and Wednesday. The
estimated Kp-index of 3 reported at 5 a.m. local this morning indicated
quiet conditions.
We can expect poor day and good nighttime operating conditions today on
80 to 40 meters and generally good conditions on the higher HF bands. 10
meters closes at night.
