WINTER FIELD DAY THIS COMING WEEKEND
Well HAMsters, was this past weekend cold enough for you? Now I’m
thinking I may not want to take the little QRP rig out to the picnic
table for Winter Field Day on Saturday afternoon after all. Think I’ll
opt for the warm “Home” category instead. Winter Field Day is the last
full weekend of January, starting at 1900 UTC Saturday, January 29. It
ends at 1900 UTC Sunday, January 30. The use of any mode that fully
supports the exchange (Call sign, class & category, and ARRL Section) is
allowed during the contest. Operation on all bands – HF, VHF, and UHF,
with the exception of 12, 17,30 and 60 meters, is allowed and all modes
but no FT8 or FT4. For more information, visit the Winter Field Day
website, www.winterfieldday.com.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 4 p.m. local. There are 2 reported numbered sunspot
regions on the Sun facing Earth this morning. The Prediction Center
expects solar activity to be very low today through Wednesday. There is
a slight chance for a C-class flare today. On Sunday the observed Solar
Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was 94. (Last Sunday it was 119.) The
index is predicted to measure 90 today and tomorrow and then 88 on
Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average is 97.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. NOAA expects
conditions to be quiet to active today and then quiet to unsettled
Tuesday and Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 1 reported at 7 a.m.
local this morning indicates quiet geomagnetic conditions.
We can expect fair day and good nighttime operating conditions today on
80 and 40 meters, good on 30 and 20, fair on 17 and 15 and poor on the
higher bands.

*FREE FIXER-UPPER* Well, the ice storm indirectly damaged my Hex beam.
The Hex Lock fold over mount failed due to ice buildup and unlocked.
This allowed the Hex to flop over and bent the hub plate slightly.
Nothing else as damaged and the hub plate needs to be straightened back
out and it will be a 100% antenna. In the mean time I ordered another
antenna. If someone wants a Hex beam and is willing to do a little bit
of work you can have it. Gary Mitchelson, NC3Z/4, nc3z.gary@gmail.com,
