PAMLICO COMMUNICATIONS NET WEDNESDAY
Something different for this Wednesday night’s (Jan 19th) net, a simplex
and repeater exercise. Here’s the plan:
We will do our regular check-in on the Oriental N4ONC 2M REPEATER at 1930.
After check-in we will change frequency to 146.550 SIMPLEX. Bill Olah
(KR4LO) will call the roll. Upon completion of the simplex check-in we
will reassemble on the N4ONC repeater to re-group.
Once everyone is back on the N4ONC repeater, we will change frequency
again to attempt to check-in on the KR4LO REPEATER on 444.350 MHz. Bill
Olah will again do the roll call, this time on the KR4LO 440 repeater.
Once everyone has been checked in on the KR4LO repeater we will change
frequencies once again to 445.975 MHz SIMPLEX for the simplex portion of
the night’s activities.
Once we finish checking in using the 445.975 frequency everyone is to
return to the N4ONC repeater for a hot wash.
You will need to have the following frequencies programed into your
radio of choice:
147.210 (+) 151.4 tone
146.550 FM simplex
444.350 (+) 85.4 tone
445.975 FM simplex
Should be great fun. Mike, K4NLC

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 4 p.m. local. There are 7 reported numbered sunspot
regions on the Sun facing Earth this morning. We have had no significant
solar flares. The Prediction Center expects solar activity to be low
today through Wednesday. There is a chance for an M-class flare today
and a slight chance for M-class flares Tuesday and Wednesday. On Sunday
the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was up to 119. (Last
Sunday it was 102.) The index is predicted to measure 115 today and
tomorrow and then 110 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average has
reached 96.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was reached minor storm levels yesterday.
NOAA expects conditions to be unsettled to active today and then quiet
to unsettled Tuesday and then quiet on Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index
of 2 reported at 7 a.m. local this morning indicates quiet geomagnetic
conditions.
We can expect fair day and good nighttime operating conditions today on
80 and 40 meters, good on 30 and 20, fair on 17 and 15 and poor on the
higher bands.
Contradicting the forecasts, Dick, K4JJW reports lots of activity on the
higher bands and found success on 10 meters (CW) yesterday. Nets are now
reappearing on 10 sideband most evenings. Spinning the dial on 20 and 15
during Sunday’s steady rain we heard more than a few very loud Eastern
European stations. Even propagation on six meters improved somewhat for
the January VHF contest over the weekend. It apparently peaked late
Sunday. Not surprisingly, on the Magic Band most activity was FT8.
Almost all the skip for us was almost due west.
