SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported solar activity was very low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 4 p.m. local. There are two reported numbered
sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth this morning. The Prediction
Center expects solar activity to be very low today through Wednesday
with a slight chance for C-class flares each day. On Sunday the observed
Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was 79. (Last Sunday it was 78.) The
index is predicted to measure 78 today, 78 tomorrow and 80 on Wednesday.
The SFI 90 day trailing average is still creeping up and now at 88.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled yesterday. NOAA
expects conditions to be quiet to unsettled today and then quiet Tuesday
and Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 1 reported at 7 a.m. local this
morning reflects our current quiet geomagnetic conditions.
We can expect good operating conditions today on 80 and 40 meters, fair
on 30 and 20, poor on the higher bands. Last evening, DXMaps showed
considerable FT8 TEP activity on 6 meters between stations in the
Midwest and stations in South America. Sideband contacts were few but
those were also TEP or Es. It’s time to start watching the calling
frequencies.

excellent article written by Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA at
