DAVID L PURIFOY JR., N4ENE (SK)
We regret to report the passing of David L.”Puff” Purifoy, N4ENE a long
time member of PARS on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, after a long
illness. First licensed in December 1977 as WD4PDZ, Dave was an active
“DX chaser” and member of several DX Associations. He enjoyed
contesting, especially in RTTY and CW contests, and was one of the
founders of the “Carolina Shine Contest Club”, a group of avid
contesters in Pamlico County. Dave also enjoyed boating and fishing.
Dubbed “Puff” by his close friends, his presence will be sorely missed.
Our sincere condolences go to Rose Humphrey-Harris and to Dave’s family.
Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 23, 2021, at
Bryant Funeral Home in Alliance. Visitation will precede the service at
10:30 a.m.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported solar activity was low during the 24 hour period ending
yesterday at 5 p.m. local. There are no reported numbered sunspot
regions on the Sun facing Earth this morning. The Prediction Center
expects solar activity to be very low today through Wednesday but with a
slight chance for a C-class flare Tuesday and Wednesday. On Sunday the
observed Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was 77. (Last Sunday it was
85.) The index is predicted to measure 78 today, 80 tomorrow and on
Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average is up one to 83.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to active yesterday. NOAA
expects conditions to be quiet to active today and Tuesday, then quiet
on Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 2 reported at 5 a.m. local this
morning reflects our current quiet geomagnetic conditions.
We can expect fair to good operating conditions today on 80 and 40
meters, fair on 30 and 20, and poor on the higher bands. The VHF bands
are expected to remain quiet in the US.
Even though there were no sunspots yesterday, according to Dick, K4JJW,
the HF bands were hot, especially for FT8 users. Sunday morn brought
chock-a-block signals not only on 40, 20 and 15 but even on 12 and 10
meters. There may not be much activity on the magic band here in the US
this morning–only one Es and a few MS contacts–but DXMaps shows lots
of activity in Europe. Will there be an early Winter season?
