PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
Our next meeting will be at 0900 this Saturday, August 28th at
Brantley’s Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park

month except June when the club participates in the annual ARRL Field
Day or when in conflict with a major holiday. We hope to see you all
there. For more information contact Pamlico Amateur Radio Society
President Bill Michne, WM3X, 249-1175 or drmichne73@gmail.com.
PRESIDENT’S SOAPBOX
Most of you are probably aware that the FCC has changed the rules
regarding station evaluation for RF exposure limits. In the past most
amateur radio stations have been exempt from this requirement, but the
new rules allow for very few exemptions. Note that the exposure limits
set by the FCC have not changed. The new change is the requirement to
perform the evaluation. While that might sound daunting initially, the
ARRL has put an exposure calculator on their website. I took a few
minutes to get familiar with the calculator, and found that it is quite
simple to use. You can do multiple calculations in a matter of minutes.
For example, at my station I have the options of running up to 1500
watts output to my vertical antenna on the low bands (160, 80, and 40
meters), but am limited to 500 watts on 20, 15, and 10 meters using my
trapped tribander. I ran all the possible combinations of power,
frequency, and mode, and found that I was fully within the exposure
limits for all of them. I can imagine that some mega contest stations
might have some RF exposure limitations, but for the vast majority of
hams these rules changes will be a non-issue. …_._ de WM3X, Bill
Michne, 252-249-1175, drmichne73@gmail.com.
BIKE MS IS BACK and HAM HELP IS NEEDED
From Bruce Arnold, KS8l
“The Bike MS bikeathon will be held on Sept. 11 and 12th. We need more
ham operators as there are many positions yet to be filled, such as
manning a rest stop, shadowing an MS staff person, or out on the course
in your vehicle, ensuring the health and welfare of our cyclists. It’s
such a well-run event and tons of fun.” Contact Bruce at
bruce.ks8l@gmail.com to get signed up.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported solar activity was low during the 24 hour period ending
yesterday at 5 p.m. local. A C1-class solar flare erupted yesterday
morning at 0620 local time. This was the sixth C-class flare from new
sunspot region AR2859 during over weekend. It is the one NOAA reported
numbered sunspot region on the Sun facing Earth this morning and is
likely to produce more flares. The Prediction Center expects solar
activity to be very low through Wednesday with a chance for C-class
flares. On Sunday the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was
- (Last Sunday it was 75.) The index is predicted to be 77 today and
tomorrow, 76 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average remains 79,
the same as the past four Mondays.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. NOAA expects
conditions to be quiet to unsettled today and tomorrow, quiet to active
on Wednesday due to solar wind. The estimated Kp-index of 1 reported at
5 a.m. local this morning reflects our current very quiet geomagnetic
conditions.
We can expect fair daytime and good nighttime operating conditions today
on 80 and 40 meters, fair on 30 and 20, and poor on the higher bands–no
real change from last week. We can go back to working the gray line for
reliable but unspectacular DX on HF. The VHF bands have gone quiet in
the US. Europe still has some Es activity on 6M.
