PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
Our next meeting will be at 0900 this Saturday, July 31st at Brantley’s
Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park on the side
or out back. Our meetings are held the last Saturday of each month
except June when the club participates in the annual ARRL Field Day or
when in conflict with a major holiday. We hope to see you all there. For
more information contact Pamlico Amateur Radio Society President Bill
Michne, WM3X, 249-1175 or drmichne73@gmail.com.
PRESIDENT’S SOAPBOX
Well, I finally got around to getting the club Field Day entry
submitted. I was dragging my feet because I knew that my WSJT-X log
contained QSO data for both WM3X and the club station N4PRS, and I
wasn’t looking forward to sorting that out and exporting it to the N3FJP
Field Day logger. However, it turned out to be amazingly simple. I was
also able to move some of our members’ paper logs into the logger and
submit them electronically. Again, pretty easy. I also saw in one of
the ARRL news feeds that as of whatever date it was the Field Day
submissions they had received were overwhelmingly Class D (home station,
commercial power). Participation in support of N4PRS was up. Last year
we had a total of five participants. This year we had six participants
at the station plus several adding their scores to our aggregate score.
Too bad we have to wait until the December QST to see all the results.
_…_ The propagation literature is starting to buzz with the increase
in the number of sunspots as cycle 25 activity gets underway. But if
you have trouble keeping all those numbers straight, just turn on your
radio. You’ll be amazed at what you can hear. Throw FT8 into the mix
and the fun really picks up. 73 for now, and I hope to see you all on
Saturday. Right now I have to go check the bands. …_._ de WM3X,

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported solar activity was very low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. There are two numbered sunspot regions
on the Sun facing Earth this morning. The Prediction Center expects
solar activity to be very low through Wednesday with a slight chance for
a C-class flare each day. On Sunday the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI)
at Penticton was 82. (Last Sunday it was 80.) The index is predicted to
be 82 today, tomorrow and Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average is
up one to 79.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. NOAA expects
conditions to be quiet today, tomorrow and then quiet to active on
Wednesday when a stream of solar wind is expected. The estimated
Kp-index of 1 reported at 5 a.m. local this morning reflects our current
quiet geomagnetic conditions.
We can expect fair daytime and good nighttime operating conditions today
on 80 and 40 meters, fair on 30 and 20, and poor on the higher bands.
That said, if you use FT8 as a propagation indicator, it sure looks like
conditions are improving, especially on 20, 15 and 10 meters. Although
the end of July normally brings the end of the summer Es and therefore
the end of dX on six meters, this past week gave us long openings and
many double and triple hop contacts both east and west. As I write this
Sunday evening, a station in Kansas was shown on dxmaps working Japan
and the East coast is loaded with activity. Yesterday, the action was
north-south with strong signals from as far south as Grenada, Columbia
and Brazil; on Friday morning, it was all Western Europe, Spain, France
and England. As was said last week, this has been a good Summer season
for those who play in the Magic Band… and it isn’t over yet.
