PRESIDENT’S SOAPBOX
The guys who passed the Technician exam a couple of weeks ago now have
call signs. They are: Steve Silveira, KO4EDA; Joe Lupton, KO4EDB; and
Bud McClard, KI5JJU. Yes, that’s right, Bud got a “5” call, even though
all his paperwork showed that he lived in New Bern. But the FCC thought
he lived in Texas, so he got the “5” call. He managed to get the FCC to
correct his address on his license, but he still has the “5” call. He
is considering having it changed to a “4.” _…_ Field Day is less
than two weeks away. Just so everyone is on the same page, PARS will
not be operating from a portable site. Instead, I invite and encourage
all members who have working stations to operate from their homes using
either commercial or emergency power. Check your logging software to be
sure it’s current for this year, as there have been some rules changes
that will affect how scores are calculated. Be sure to submit your
scores and when you do, be sure to include the official club name,
“Pamlico Amateur Radio Society, Ltd.” As I’ve mentioned in the past, my
station will be using the club call sign, N4PRS, and will be operating
mostly on single sideband, but some CW as well, following band
conditions on 80, 40, 20, and 15 meters. I welcome any and all PARS
members, particularly Technician licensees to come and get some
experience operating. No previous experience necessary. The station
will be available throughout the entire duration of the event. Just let
me know in advance when you would like to be here so I can set up a
schedule. …_._ de WM3X, Bill Michne, 252-249-1175, drmichne73@gmail.com.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hours
ending yesterday at 5 pm local. There is one sunspot region on the Sun
facing Earth this morning. Sunspot AR2765 is quiet and after a week
facing us is about to rotate off the face of the Sun. According to the
Space Weather Prediction Center activity will continue to be very low
through Wednesday. On Sunday, the reported Solar Flux Index (SFI) at
Penticton was 70. The index is predicted to register 70 today and 68
Tuesday and Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average is 70.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. It is expected to be
quiet today then quiet to unsettled tomorrow and Wednesday. The
estimated Kp-index of 1 reported at 5 a.m. local this morning indicates
we are currently experiencing quiet conditions.

We can expect fair daytime and good nighttime operating conditions on 80
and 40 meters, fair both day and night on 30 and 20. Expect poor
conditions on the higher bands.

The Magic Band did its magic for the June VHF contest over the weekend.
On Saturday afternoon, one did not know whether to work European
stations or play in the contest. The opening continued into the late
evening. There were still stations to work early Sunday morning. Things
soon after went south only get active again in the evening. Six stayed
open until after contest closing. Just great fun! You can’t plan for
this stuff!
