PRESIDENT’S SOAPBOX
The ARRL continues to push for home operations by individual members for
Field Day. In the latest article on arrl.org they are promoting FD as
an opportunity to try new modes and bands. They are particularly
promoting Technician licensees to operate on 6 and 2 meters, FM simplex
and SSB. It’s also a great opportunity for more experienced club
members to serve as Elmers, helping the newbies set up antennas and make
contacts. _…_ As if the COVID19 lockdown and the lack of sunspots
weren’t enough to make life somewhat unpleasant, here comes tropical
storm Arthur. At this writing the weather people aren’t sure of its
exact path, but as we all know the only time they are sure of the exact
path is after it’s gone by. So just in case, please make sure your
home, family, and emcom equipment are ready. _…_ Several months ago
I was passing around to club members a book entitled, “The Rod Newkirk
Collection.” Newkirk, you may recall, was the editor of the How’s DX
column in QST for some 30 years, and the book is an entertaining
selection of his early experiences in ham radio. Anyway, I have lost
track of the book. If one of you has the book, please let me know, as
other members are waiting to read it. Thanks. …_._ de WM3X, Bill

EMERGENCY FREQUENCIES
With TS Arthur passing by, it appears our tropical weather season is
starting early. It’s time to get ready.
A list of important local Eastern NC/National Emergency Frequencies is
at the end of this PARSgram. You may want to clip it and put it near
your radio. Please reply to this Email with any omissions or corrections.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hours
ending yesterday at 5 pm local. There are no sunspot regions on the Sun
facing Earth this morning. Solar activity will continue to be very low
through Wednesday according to the Space Weather Prediction Center. That
said, spaceweather.com reports two regions on the Sun just rotating into
view may form into sunspots. If so, that whill break a 16 day stretch
without. On Sunday, the reported Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was
70. The index is predicted to register 70 today through Wednesday. The
SFI 90 day trailing average is also 70.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. It is expected to be
quiet to unsettled today, tomorrow and Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index
of 0 reported at 5 a.m. local this morning indicates we are currently
experiencing quiet conditions.
We can expect fair daytime and good nighttime operating conditions on 80
and 40 meters, fair both day and night on 30 and 20. Expect poor
conditions on the higher bands. Both Dick, K4JJW, and Gary, NC3Z, report
6 Meters lively, especially in the afternoon and evening… “Past 2
weeks 6M on FT8 has been good, lots of central and south America,
Caribbean, and even Africa with EA8DO. Then the past few days lots of
double hop to the west coast, CA, WA, OR, ID, UT, NM, AZ. The Hex beam
has been working well.”–Gary
