PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
Our next meeting will be at 0900 this Saturday, Jan 25th at Brantley’s
Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park on the side
or out back. Our meetings are held the last Saturday of each month
except June when the club participates in the annual ARRL Field Day or
when in conflict with a major holiday. We hope to see you all there. For
more information contact Pamlico Amateur Radio Society President Bill
Michne, WM3X, 249-1175 or drmichne73@gmail.com.
Following the short business meeting Lor Kutchins, W3QA, will be
presenting “GETTING STARTING WITH WINLINK”, a short overview for those
who missed the Winlink series the first time and a refresher for the
rest of us. Lor promises it will “foreshadow a new round of on-air
exercises”… Don’t miss it!
PRESIDENT’S SOAPBOX
President’s Soapbox: It’s official, PARS will sponsor a Technician level
course beginning February 3rd. The details of the course appear
elsewhere in this PARSGram. Nevertheless, if you have any questions
don’t hesitate to contact me. Also, it there is interest we could
follow this course with a General upgrade course. _…_ ARRL has
launched a new magazine called On the Air, for beginning and
intermediate level amateurs. The projects seem to be ideal for Elmer
backing. _…_ As you plan your summer vacation, consider this. The
17th International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) High Speed Telegraphy
(HST) World Championship will take place August 20 – 24 in Ulaanbaatar,
Mongolia. Or you could take in Europe’s HST Cup and Balkan HST
Championships May 8 – 12 in Elbasan, Albania. Of course, this sort of
thing isn’t for everybody. Last year’s event was won at a speed of 195
wpm! I wonder if people can even talk that fast. …_._ de WM3X, Bill
Michne, 252-249-1175, drmichne73@gmail.com.
TECHNICIAN COURSE STARTS MONDAY 3 FEB
Amateur radio operators use wireless technology to communicate with
other amateurs around the corner, around the country, and around the
world. This course prepares the student to pass the examination for the
entry level Technician Class amateur radio operator license. The course
covers the relevant FCC regulations, equipment, operating procedures,
and the fundamentals of wireless technology, and finishes with the
license examination. Knowledge of Morse code is no longer a requirement
for any amateur license. The course will be held at the Pamlico
Community College, 6:30 to 8:30 PM on Monday evenings beginning on
February 3rd and ending on March 30th. There is no course fee. The
textbook and examination fees are $33.00 and $15.00, respectively. For
more information, and to register, contact Bill Michne at 252-249-1175
or by email to drmichne73@gmail.com.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hours
ending yesterday at 4 pm local. There are no numbered sunspot regions on
the Sun facing Earth this morning. Solar activity will continue to be
very low according to the Space Weather Prediction Center. On Sunday,
the reported Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was 72. The index is
predicted to register 72 through Wednesday. The more important SFI 90
day trailing average is up one to 71.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. It is expected to be
quiet to active today and Tuesday, quiet to unsettled Wednesday. The
estimated Kp-index of 1 reported at 7 a.m. local this morning indicates
we are currently experiencing very quiet conditions.
We can expect fair daytime and good nighttime operating conditions on 80
and 40 meters for the next few days. Fair conditions both day and night
are expected on 30 and 20. Poor conditions will continue on the higher
bands. Unless my coax went to a dead short, 6 meters was deafeningly
quiet here on the first afternoon of the January VHF Contest. Glancing
at DXmaps, it appears the band opened up by Sunday evening and the end
of the contest. Many long distance Es contacts–including some
voice–were listed, mostly from the NE into the Midwest.
