SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reports that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. The Prediction Center expects solar
activity to be low today through Wednesday with a 20% chance for M-class
flares. There are 5 numbered sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth
this morning. There were 7 last Monday, 9 the Monday before.
Sunday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was 150.
Last Sunday’s was 174. The index is predicted to measure 140 today, 130
Tuesday and 135 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was 166
yesterday. It was the same last Sunday.
The geomagnetic field was quiet Sunday. The SWPC expects conditions to
be quiet today and Tuesday, quiet to active Wednesday. The planetary
K-index at 5 am this morning was 1.00 indicating quiet conditions.
For the next few days, HF conditions will be somewhat improved from
those we’ve experienced during the past week. Propagation is expected to
be fair on 80 through 20 during the day, good at night. Good conditions
during both day and night are expected for the 17 and 15 meter bands.
Ten and 12 should be good during the day, poor at night.

excellent article written by Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA at
