PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
Our next meeting will be at 0900 this Saturday, October 31, at Brantley’s
Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park on the side or
out back. Our meetings are held the last Saturday of each month except June
when the club participates in the annual ARRL Field Day or when in conflict
with a major holiday. We hope to see you all there. For more information
contact Pamlico Amateur Radio Society President Bill Olah, KR4LO, 249-0287
or w_olah@yahoo.com.

This is the month for the annual election of officers– see announcement and
call for candidates below.  Although not affecting the election this
year, consideration is being given to changing the date of the annual
election to November and for those elected to begin their term in January.
This and other possible changes and clarifications to the
PARS By-Laws will be offered for discussion.

Also, Bill will report on the Jamboree On The Air  and with Mike
Marsh, the Pamlico County Heritage Day activity held that same busy weekend.
Thanks go to the team of Greg Wadsworth KM4DZM and Joy McCracken, Mike Hurm
K4HPS, Dennis Giorgio  KD2DSY, and Randy Davis K4WRD led by Mike Marsh K4NLC
who put together the Heritage Day display and to the team of Mike Marsh,
Jamie King KJ4JK,  Billy Blanchard KM4EFX–a  visitor from Burlington,
Alamance County–led by Bill Olah KR4LO who supported  the scouts at Camp
Seagull.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A PARS OFFICER?
DO YOU KNOW OF SOMEONE THAT WOULD?
If you are interested in running for the office of President, Vice
President, or Treasurer, or wish to RECOMMEND A MEMBER  for one of those
offices, please reply to this PARSgram or to President Bill Olah KR4LO,
249-0287 or w_olah@yahoo.com. Officers are to be elected at the October
meeting. Known willing incumbent candidates are Bill Olah for President and
Wally Wallace KK4ASP (as bookkeeper/treasurer).  To remain viable, PARS
needs folks willing to serve as officers. You will have plenty of help.
Please consider serving.

ONE MORE TIME, ANY MARINE HF RADIO OPERATORS OUT THERE?
We have a request for help learning how to operate a Marine HF radio and
the services one can obtain using one. The owner is an experienced off-shore
sailor but this is his first HF radio, an ICOM 802. (He’s not looking to use
it on the Amateur Radio bands, at least at this time.)  If you can help him
out, let me know and I’ll put you in touch. He and his wife will soon be
heading south to the warmer island climes.  Jim, AI4WL, 249-1984 or just
reply to this PARSgram.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hours ending
yesterday at 5 pm local.  The largest recent solar event was a C2  flare
observed at 1029Z this morning. There are 4 numbered sunspot regions on the
disk facing Earth. The sunspot count this morning is 63, down from the 81
reported by NOAA last week. The Solar Flux Index (SFI) is 106, also down,
this from the 120 reported last week. That’s just above the 90 day
trailing average now at 103. The NOAA forecast has the SFI staying about the
same at 105 through Wednesday. According to the Space Weather Prediction
Center, solar activity is expected to be low for the next three days
with a slight (20%) chance for M-class flares,

The Earth’s geomagnetic field varied from quiet to unsettled over
the weekend. Solar wind speed was above normal due the residual effects of a
Coronal Mass Ejection striking the Earth on Saturday. It had minimal impact
on HF radio operations. Expect quiet to active conditions today, quiet on
Tuesday and quiet to unsettled on Wednesday.  The Kp-index was reported to
be a quiet 1 at 0800 local this morning.

Your best chance for DX is to be found on the 30 and 20 Meter Bands and then
40 Meters at night. That said, the 15 Meter  and 10 Meter bands were very
active over the weekend filled with CQ WW contest stations. African and
South American stations were favored.

THIS WEEK’S DX CHALLENGE
MOZAMBIQUE, C9.  Operators John, ZS5J and YL Beth, 2W0VOW will be
active until November 3 as C91B.  Activity will be on all HF bands
from 160 to 6 meters using CW and SSB.  Free daily logbook uploads
will be done to LoTW and ClubLog.  If you need a QSL card sent by
email, the address and information is on QRZ.com.

QSO QSO CORNER
This is the place to post contacts with DXpeditions, Special Event
Stations, or special QSO’s you would like to share.

All no reports from the County. How can that be, the bands were wide open
for the CQ WW this past weekend?

DX EXPERIENCE
We’re trying something new courtesy of Jamie, KJ4JK. Every few weeks we’ll
put up a new “experience”. You might learn something new and then have fun
if and when you make the contact. Here’s the first one:

The most expensive city in the world to live in–Singapore.
This city has recently beat out Tokyo, Japan, for the title of “most
expensive city” for 2014.  Cars can cost between 4-6 times as much in
Singapore from what they cost in the US or UK  … (for example, a Toyota
Prius actually costs about $150,000.00 there).

If you make successful contact, call or email Jamie King KJ4JK and he’ll put
you on the eligible list for the prize.
