BIG WEEKEND COMING UP
Pamlico County Heritage Day and the Scouting Jamboree on the Air are both
coming up this weekend. Heritage Day was rescheduled due to the storm. JOTA
is the big weekend for Scouts and Amateur Radio, this year close by out at
Camp Seagull. If you have the time to help with either or both, give a call
to Mike Marsh or Bill Olah. See the Calendar below for contact information.
DX EXPERIENCE
We’re trying something new courtesy of Jamie, KJ4JK. Every few weeks we’ll
put up a new “experience”. You might learn something new and then have fun
if and when you make the contact. Here’s the first one:
The most expensive city in the world to live in–Singapore.
This city has recently beat out Tokyo, Japan, for the title of “most
expensive city” for 2014. Cars can cost between 4-6 times as much in
Singapore from what they cost in the US or UK … (for example, a Toyota
Prius actually costs about $150,000.00 there).
If you make successful contact, call or email Jamie King KJ4JK and he’ll put
you on the eligible list for the prize.
mailto:kj4jk@arrl.net or telephone 249-1549.
ANY MARINE HF RADIO OPERATORS OUT THERE?
We have a request for help in learning how to operate a Marine HF radio and
the services one can obtain using one. The owner is an experienced off-shore
sailor but this is his first HF radio. (He’s not looking to use it on the
Amateur Radio bands, at least at this time.) If you can help him out, let
me know and I’ll put you in touch. Jim, AI4WL, 249-1984 or just reply to
this PARSgram.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hours ending
yesterday at 5 pm local. The largest recent solar event was a B9 flare
observed at 0000Z this morning. There are 3 numbered sunspot regions on the
disk facing Earth. The sunspot count this morning is 36, a low number.
The Solar Flux Index (SFI) is 85 and below the 90 day trailing average of
101. The NOAA forecast has the SFI staying nearly the same, rising to 90
Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the Space Weather Prediction Center,
solar activity is expected to be very low for the next three days with a
slight chance for C-class flares,
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to active over the weekend. The
Earth’s geomagnetic field has already reached the minor storm level this
morning. Expect quiet to active conditions Tuesday, and then unsettled to
active on Wednesday. A solar wind stream flowing from a sprawling northern
coronal hole has brought stormy conditions. The Kp-index was reported to be
a minor storm level 5 at 0800 local this morning. Geomagnetic storms
reaching the G1 level are expected during the next 24 hours.
