DRAGON BOAT RACING FESTIVAL HELP STILL NEEDED
Tom Finta K8TF is still looking for help with communication support for the
Oriental Dragonboat Festival coming up on Aug 15 at River Dunes off Orchard
Creek Rd. He could use more hams to pass info between various units
(EMT’s, Announcer, Finish line,etc.). More operators, shorter shifts. The
paddlers will practice on Friday the 14h and race on Saturday. Please let
him know if you can help at Fintatom@aol.com or 249-9838.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hours ending
yesterday at 5 pm local. The largest recent solar event was a B5 flare
observed at 0548Z this morning. There are 4 numbered sunspot regions on the
disk facing Earth, all are quiet The sunspot count this morning is 51, up
from the 38 reported by NOAA a week ago at this time. The Solar Flux Index
(SFI) is 102, just above the 97 in our last PARSgram. The NOAA forecast
shows the SFI staying the same for the next three days. According to the
Space Weather Prediction Center, solar activity is expected to be very low
through Wednesday with a chance for C-class flares. However, spaceweather
dot com reported this morning that a change could be in the offing. During
the early hours of August 3rd, a new active region on the farside of the sun
“announced itself” with a bright CME.by an M-class solar flare. The CME will
not affect the Earth but the active region that caused it will soon rotate
into view.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to active over the weekend. The
Earth’s geomagnetic field is expected be quiet to unsettled today and
Tuesday and then quiet on Wednesday. The Kp-index was reported by NOAA to be
a very quiet 1 at 0800 local this morning.

There seems to be agreement by the pundits that the 2015 Summer E-layer
propagation season is winding down, Band openings are shorter, more
localized, and less frequent. There is hope that VHF operators will be
favored by an opening during the 50MHz Fall Sprint set for next Saturday
starting at 7PM local time.

THIS WEEK’S DX CHALLENGE
5E, MOROCCO. Members of ARRAM (Association Royale des Radio Amateur du

ABOUT THE PARSgram
The PARSgram is a weekly email publication for members of the Pamlico
Amateur Radio Society (PARS), an association of amateur radio operators
located in, near, or from Pamlico County, North Carolina. The PARSgram
contains announcements and information about current and planned activities
of the Society and other items of specific interest to its members. Except
to summarize information related to Solar Activity or announce expeditions
of amateur radio operators to unique distant places, special event stations,
and contests, it does not generally repeat information available elsewhere.
The PARSgram does offer a means to make known to its subscribers radio
equipment and other related items for sale or trade. Since PARS members may
have limited internet access, the PARSgram is sent in text format and kept
relatively short. Log on to the PARS Website at https://www.n4prs.org/ for
longer news articles, photos, archived PARSgrams and more. We are always
looking for items of specific interest to our members to put in the
PARSgram. If you run across a timely item or think of something you think
would interest our folks, please send it to me at jth350@embarqmail.com. —
