FIELD DAY PLANNING MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
There will be a Field Day planning meeting Saturday 23 May at Brantley’s at
0900 for all the principals involved in the set-up and running of the Field
Day event. Anyone that wants to join us for breakfast and learn more about
the process is also cordially invited. –Mike Marsh, K4NLC, (252) 636-1257
PAMLICO EMERGENCY NET (ARES) PRACTICE
The Pamlico Emergency Net meets Wednesday nights at 7:30 pm local
time on the Oriental repeater (147.210 MHz, CTCSS/PL tone 151.4, standard
offset). With Hurricane Season just around the corner and an early wake-up
call from TS Ana last week, it’s time to test your emergency set-up. It
might be a good idea to check into the net using back-up power during a
practice this month. Our ARES Coordinator is Mike Hurm, K4HPS. He can be
reached at 249-1122.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hours ending
yesterday at 5 pm local. The largest recent solar event was a C1 flare
observed at 18/0821Z. There are 6 numbered sunspot regions on the disk
facing Earth. The sunspot count this morning is 75, well down from the 134
reported by NOAA last week. The Solar Flux Index (SFI) is 131, down
from the 160 in our last PARSgram. The forecast shows the SFI dropping to
around 95 by Wednesday. According to the Space Weather Prediction Center,
solar activity is expected to stay very low through Wednesday with a 10
percent chance for M-class flares today and Tuesday and less than 1 percent
on Wednesday. All the active sunspot regions are rotating off the disk.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. The geomagnetic
field is expected to reach active levels today and tomorrow affecting mostly
the high latitudes. It then will become quiet Wednesday. The K-index was
reported by NOAA to be a quiet 3 at 0800 local this morning.
THIS WEEK’S DX CHALLENGE
KENYA, 5Z. A group of operators will be QRV as 5Z0L from May 21 to
31. Activity will be on 80 to 6 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY on 20
meters. QSL via I2YSB.
QSO QSO CORNER
This is the place to post contacts with DXpeditions, Special Event
Stations, or special QSO’s you would like to share.
The 6 Meter band awoke over the weekend. The Summer season of E-layer skip
has begun. Although signals were up and down, it was good to hear those
Canadian stations booming in around 8 p.m. local the last couple of
evenings. The strongest station worked from Whortonsville was Yuri,
UTIFG/MM way up in FN94 on Saturday. By Sunday night he was in FN68 just
above New Brunswick. Although I did not ask, his cargo ship is probably
headed for the St. Lawrence.–Jim, AI4WL.
