PARSGRAM 2014-11-24

PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
Our next meeting will be at 0900 this Saturday, Nov 29th, at Brantley’s
Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park on the side or
out back. Two days after the annual Thanksgiving feast, here’s another
chance to continue the consumption pattern of the season. “Fox Hunt” is on
the agenda. There will be an auction after the meeting so bring your
checkbook. Our meetings are held the last Saturday of each month except June
when the club participates in the annual ARRL Field Day or when in conflict
with a major holiday. We hope to see you all there. For more information
contact Pamlico Amateur Radio Society President Bill Olah, KR4LO, 249-0287
or w_olah@yahoo.com.

SKYWARN APPRECIATION DAY, FIRST WEEKEND IN DECEMBER.
SKYWARN Appreciation Day is coming up on Friday, Dec 5th from 7pm
through Saturday, Dec 6th at 7pm at the National Weather Service office just
off US-70 on Roberts Road in Newport. Head over, get the tour, and spend
some time operating the office’s HF station in the annual NWS QSO Party.
SKYWARN Recognition Day began in 1999 by the National Weather Service and
the American Radio Relay League. It celebrates the contributions that
volunteer SKYWARN radio operators make to the National Weather Service. The
official webpage for the event is:  www.wrh.noaa.gov/mtr/hamradio.  For more
information contact John Hopkins, KJ4JPH, or Janice, KJ4JPE, at
hopkinszoo1@msn.com.  Drop one of them a short email to let them know you
are coming so the Newport folks can plan.
How about getting a few of your friends together and heading over for a
few hours on Saturday. Meet the forecast folks on duty.  See the tools they
use.  Maybe work a few stations during the WX Service QSO Party.  Good fun.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hours ending
Sunday afternoon at 4 pm local. The  largest recent solar event was a C4
event observed this morning at 24/1105 from Region 2217.  There are
currently 3 numbered sunspot regions on the disk. The sunspot count this
morning is 66, down from the 91 reported by NOAA last Monday. The Solar Flux
Index is 173, nearly the same as the 172 in last week’s PARSgram. It  is
expected to drop way down to 140 on Wednesday after active sunspot region
AR2209 disappears from view. According to the Space Weather Prediction
Center, solar activity should continue to be moderate with a 25% chance for
X-class flares and a 60% chance for M-class flares each day through
Wednesday. Radio blackouts reaching the brief R1 level are likely in the
next 24 hours for stations on the sunlit side of the Earth.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active
during the 24 hour period ending yesterday afternoon. The geomagnetic field
is expected to be quiet to unsettled today and be quiet on Tuesday and
Wednesday. The K-index was reported by NOAA to be a quiet 2 at 0700 local
this morning. No storms are predicted.

THIS WEEK’S DX CHALLENGE
VIETNAM, 3W.  Tony, KM0O will be QRV as 3W3O from Da Nang from
November 25 to December 24.  Activity is on all bands.  This
includes an entry in the upcoming CQ World Wide DX CW contest.  QSL
to home call.

QSO CORNER
This is the place to post contacts with DXpeditions, Special Event
Stations, or special QSO’s you would like to share.

Nothing reported this week. Guess none of our PARS folks was able to add
ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS, VU4 to the log last week.  There’s still time.
If you can hear ’em try to work them through the crowd.  Reportedly the
folks on site have 6 stations now up and running but they are having site
power problems.  The low voltage at their location on Neil Island is causing
the power amps to shut down. BTW, these islands are a long way away from us
on the opposite side of the globe.  They are located at the juncture of the
Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, and are a Union Territory of India. The
territory is only 93 miles north of Aceh in Indonesia.  They are separated
from Thailand and Myanmar (Burma) by the Andaman Sea.
