Your inbox gets another rest. Our next PARSgram will be out on October 20th.

ANNUAL ELECTION OF PARS OFFICERS AT OCTOBER MEETING
(Treasurer Gail “Wally” Wallace’s Notice of Elections is provided for those
members who may not have received it by email last week.}
At the [September] PARS meeting…, it was noted that the vote
for the 2015 officers will be held at the October 2014 meeting.
A call for volunteer(s) to serve on an election committee did not
surface anyone available to undertake this effort.  Therefore, Bill Olah and
I will serve as points of communication for anyone who wishes to serve in
any officer role.
At [the October 25, 2014 PARS Meeting -ed], we will select a
President, Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer.
Current officers respectively are Bill Olah, Randy Davis, and me, Gail
M.”Wally” Wallace.
We three are willing to continue in our current roles, and we will be
put forward for a vote at the meeting.
Please let Bill Olah or me know if you would like to have your name
presented as running for any of these positions in October as well.
We plan to take an open vote via show of hands as we have done in the
past few years.  However, as stipulated in the by-laws, if any member
eligible to vote would prefer paper ballets, this request will be
accommodated.
Thank you all for you efforts on behalf of PARS.
Regards,    Wally & Bill

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hours ending
Sunday night at 5 pm local. The largest  recent solar event was a C1 event
observed at 06/1236Z. There are currently 8 numbered sunspot regions on the
disk, none showing much activity.  The sunspot count this morning is 106,
down almost 50 percent from the 200 reported here last Monday.  The Solar
Flux Index is 128 also well down from the 181 in last weeks report and now
just below our 90 day trailing average of 133. The Solar Flux is expected to
slide to 120 by Wednesday.  According to the Space Weather Prediction
Center, solar activity should be low through Wednesday.  What a difference a
week makes….
The Earth’s geomagnetic field activity was quiet during the 24 hour
period ending yesterday afternoon. The geomagnetic field is expected to be
quiet to unsettled today and quiet on Tuesday and Wednesday. The I-index was
1 at 0800 local this morning.

DX CHALLENGES FOR THE WEEKS AHEAD
WEST KIRIBATI, T30.  A group of operators are QRV as T30D from the
Southern Tarawa Atoll, IOTA OC-017, until October 15.  Activity is
on 160 to 6 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY with four stations active
at all times.  QSL via DL4SVA.

VK9L, LORD HOWE ISLAND. Mathias, DJ2HD, one of the team members of the
Lagunaria DX Group going to Lord Howe (signing as VK9DLXVK9LM), announced
that he received his VK9DJ callsign/license to use on Lord Howe between
October 10-12th before the main team starts their big operation. Activity
by Mathias will be on CW, SSB and RTTY. QSL via DJ2HD, direct or by the
Bureau.

QSO CORNER
This is the place to post contacts with DXpeditions, Special Event
Stations, or special QSO’s you would like to share.

So who worked Tristan de Cunha, ZD9, last month besides K4JJW?  If not,
you have a long wait for your next chance. The ferry/re-supply vessel that
took the two hams to the remote island is enroute back to Cape Town as you
read this. According to Wikipedia, it is the most remote inhabited
archipelago in the world, lying 1,243 miles from the nearest inhabited land,
Lacking an airport, the islands can be reached only by sea. Fishing boats
from South Africa service the islands eight or nine times a year and big
resupply ships only on occasion. And you thought Pamlico County was out-of
the way. About 300 hardy folks live there.

Word has it that Tim Allen (Timothy Alan Dick), the actor/comedian who
plays Mike Baxter KA0XTT on  the “Last Man Standing” sitcom, now is a real
Ham.  He received his technician license and call KK6OTD in September
without fanfare.  Mandy, his  outlandish TV daughter, has the TV call KF0XIE but as far as we know, is not yet licensed in the real world.

ABOUT THE PARSgram
The PARSgram is a weekly email publication for members of the Pamlico
Amateur Radio Society (PARS), an association of amateur radio operators
located in, near, or from Pamlico County, North Carolina.  The PARSgram
contains announcements and information about current and planned activities
of the Society and other items of specific interest to its members.  Except
to summarize information related to Solar Activity or announce expeditions
of amateur radio operators to unique distant places, special event stations,
and contests, it does not generally repeat information available elsewhere.
The PARSgram does offer a means to make known to its subscribers radio
equipment and other related items for sale or trade.  Since PARS members may
have limited internet access, the PARSgram is sent in text format and kept
relatively short.  We are always looking for items of specific interest to
our members to put in the PARSgram.  If you run across a timely item or
think of something you think would interest our folks, please send it to me
at jth350@embarqmail.com.  — Jim Hartmeyer, AI4WL, Editor (20121126)
