JAMBOREE ON THE AIR (JOTA) COMING SOON
Jamboree on the Air provides the opportunity for millions of Scouts around
the world to meet on the air via Amateur Radio. This year the event will be
held on Saturday and Sunday, October 19-20. This will be the 56th year of
this annual on-the-air event!  The World Scout Bureau reported that the 2010
JOTA had just over 700,000 Scout participants from nearly 6,000 amateur
radio stations! The official hours are from Saturday at 00:00 hours local
time (right at midnight Friday) to Sunday 24:00 (midnight Sunday evening).
PARS President Bill Olah KR4LO and several other PARS folks are heading up
to the end of NC306 and the Phosphate Plant  Park and Conference Center to
set up a station on Friday, the 18th.  They plan to put Scouts on the air
through the weekend.  Bill could use your help.  He needs more control
operators and teachers. If you can spend a couple of hours during the
weekend along the scenic Pamlico River, please call Bill at 249-0287 or
email him at w_olah@yahoo.com.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A PARS OFFICER IN 2014?
DO YOU KNOW OF SOMEONE THAT WOULD?
If you are interested in running for the office of President, Vice
President, or Treasurer, or wish to RECOMMEND A MEMBER  for one of
those offices, please reply to this PARSgram or to Tom Corwin KI4NSP at
249-1950 or wincord41@earthlink.net. Officers are to be elected at the
October meeting. Willing incumbents are Bill Olah for President and Wally
Wallace KK4ASP (as bookkeeper/treasurer).  VP Tom Corwin KI4NSP does not
wish to run for re-election. To remain viable, PARS needs folks willing to
serve as officers. You will have plenty of help.  Please consider serving.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was at low levels for the 24 hours ending
Sunday night at 8 pm local. The largest solar event of the period was a C1
event observed at 06/1424Z Oct. There are currently 4 numbered sunspot
regions on the disk. The Sunspot count is 53 up from 39 last Monday. NOAA
predicts solar activity will be mostly low through Wednesday with a slight
chance for an M-class flare (10% chance). The Solar Flux was 107 this
morning down a few from the 114 reported last week. It is expected to drop
to 100 by Wednesday.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet over the weekend.  The estimated
planetary K-index at 8 am local on 07 October was 2. Geomagnetic conditions
are expected to be light through Wednesday. There is a possibility of
increased geomagnetic activity starting Thursday due to solar wind flowing
from a newly developed coronal hole.

Propagation should be good on the 20 and 30 Meter bands, 40 at night. It
also has been surprisingly good on 10M mid to late during the day.

DX CHALLENGES FOR THE WEEK
MAYOTTE, FH.  A large group of operators are QRV as TO2TT until
October 17.  Activity is on 160 to 6 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY
with four stations active.  QSL direct via I2YSB.

Just so you know, extracted from Wikipedia:
Mayotte is an overseas department and region of France consisting of a main
island, Grande-Terre (or Maore), a smaller island, Petite-Terre (or
Pamanzi), and several islets around these two. The archipelago is located in
the northern Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean, namely between
northwestern Madagascar and northeastern Mozambique. Mayotte’s area is 144
sq mi and, with its 212,645 people, is very densely populated at 1,473 per
sq mi. Its biggest city and prefecture is Mamoudzou. The territory is
geographically part of the Comoro Islands, but the people of Mayotte chose
to remain politically a part of France in the 1975 referendum. . Mayotte
became an overseas department of France on 31 March 2011 and will become an
Outermost region of the European Union on 1 January 2014.

CY0, Sable Island–late note:  As of Sunday night, the team may be delayed
from its scheduled Tuesday departure due to unsafe conditions on the beach
