with a major holiday. We hope to see you all there. For more information
contact Pamlico Amateur Radio Society President Bill Olah, KR4LO, 249-0287
or w_olah@yahoo.com.

This month, Tom Finta K8TF will report out on our support for the recent
Dragonboat Races; Bill will talk about the Fox Hunt practice and the
forthcoming big event.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was moderate during the 24 hours ending
yesterday at 5 pm local. The largest recent solar event was a M5 flare
observed at 0733Z this morning. There are 2 numbered sunspot regions on the
disk facing Earth. One of them, monster sunspot AR2403, is directly facing
Earth and offers the chance for X-class flares. The sunspot count this
morning is 93, a big jump from the 32 reported by NOAA a week ago at this
time. The Solar Flux Index (SFI) is 133, reflecting the increase in solar
activity. It was 86 in our last PARSgram. The NOAA forecast shows the SFI
dropping to 120 today and tomorrow and then back up to 125 on Wednesday.
According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, solar activity is expected
to be moderate through Wednesday with a good chance for more M-class flares
and a slight chance for X-class flares. Radio blackouts reaching the R1
level (minutes) are likely for the sunlit side of the Earth during the next
24 hours according to NOAA at 0800 local this morning..

The Earth’s geomagnetic field reached major storm levels over the weekend.
A solar wind stream hit Earth’s magnetic field during the early hours of
Aug. 23rd. The impact sparked a moderately strong (Kp=6) geomagnetic storm
and bright auroras over Canada and northern-tier US states. More storms are
possible. A minor CME is expected to impact the Earth’s magnetic field today
and tomorrow. The Earth’s geomagnetic field is expected reach minor storm
levels today, be quiet to active Tuesday and Wednesday. Of course, these
storms will primarily affect the polar regions. The Kp-index was reported by
NOAA to be a quiet 2 at 0800 local this morning.
