PAMLICO COMMUNICATIONS TEAM MEETING THIS SATURDAY
– EHPC 2024 Hurricane Exercise
On June 13, 2024, the Eastern Healthcare Preparedness Coalition (EHPC)
in Greenville, NC and the North Carolina Auxiliary Communications
Eastern Region (AUXCOMM) in Kinston, NC, collaborated to conduct an
interoperable Communications Exercise (COMMEX). This 2024 Hurricane
Communications and Information Sharing Exercise was extended to
statewide partners and federal agencies within North Carolina, and
subsequently to all FEMA Region 3 and 4 Auxiliary Communications and
SHARES stations. The primary objective of this exercise was to bolster
preparedness for the upcoming 2024 Hurricane season.
The EHPC COMMEX is an all-hazards exercise primarily focused on
healthcare across the region. It included various play lanes designed to
challenge participants with real-life scenarios encountered in their
respective fields. The participants included public safety agencies;
healthcare facilities; state agencies ie Highway Patrol, AUXCOMM, etc.;
and federal agencies ie USCG, etc.
This event included 98 total participants from 52 agencies in North
Carolina. And 227 stations and/ or agencies outside NC sent Winlink
Hospital reports from 16 other states.
An online amateur radio group, Wavetalkers.com, made a YouTube
presentation on this particular COMMEX. Since the Pamlico Communications
Team (PCT) will be discussing this exercise in greater detail during our
next meeting on July 13th, I encourage you to view this video ahead of

gussied up with a RDF loop on his RF protective helmet and whip antenna
behind his dorsal fin guiding the “Oh Deere” tractor in the Great
Crokerfest Parade? Thanks go to Paul, K4MMB, who again represented PARS
at Oriental’s big event.
WHERE IS SHE NOW? EASTERN EXPRESS DAY 109 (or so)
Surprise, surprise! Guess what, the little Eastern Express might be back
in Siberia again! Last Monday she was wandering around the middle of
Canada. No reports for days. Then at around 6am our time on Thursday–
Happy 4th of July–a bunch of stations copied her signal from the middle
of the Atlantic, halfway between Newfoundland and France. She had caught
a big tail wind, completed lap number 4 and was well into her 5th. By
4am our time on Friday, she was over the English Channel; six hours
later at 9:58 am she was over Germany nearing Berlin. A big speed up
indeed! Lots of stations copied her for those two days… But since
then, quiet. As I write this on Sunday afternoon, lu7aa.org estimates
she’s in grid MO25ie near Tyumen, Russia. Maybe. If there, she’s in
conflicting winds at 40,000 feet.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reports that solar activity was moderate during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. The Space Weather Prediction Center
expects solar activity to be low today through Wednesday but with a 40%
chance for M-class flares. There are 9 numbered sunspot regions on the
Sun facing Earth this morning. There were 15 last Monday, 11 the Monday
before.
Sunday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was 171,
last Sunday’s was 174. The index is predicted to measure 165 today, 165
Tuesday and 165 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was 182
yesterday. It was 179 last Sunday.
The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled yesterday. The SWPC expects
the field to be quiet to active today, quiet to unsettled tomorrow and
then quiet on Wednesday. The planetary K-index at 5 a.m. this morning
was 2.00 indicating quiet conditions.
For the next several days, propagation is expected to be poor to fair
during the day, good at night on 80 to 20; good on 17 and 15, and good
