WHERE IS SHE NOW? EASTERN EXPRESS DAY 74 (or so)
She’s been heard, finally! We too have been wondering where the little
balloon might be. No one had reported her transmissions since the 29th.
Then, late Saturday and then very early EDT on Sunday, two stations
copied her, one in Alaska, one in Japan. Apparently, after drifting
north into the Laptiv Sea, she had turned south and was retracing her
steps. The Eastern Express was over the southern Kamchatka Penninsula
heading east at around 30 mph. By yesterday afternoon, around 5 p.m.
EDT, the Eastern Express was already well into the Northern Pacific
Ocean passing just to the south of Attu Station. This morning LU7AA
estimated she was nearing Adak. Good news. She’s a tough one.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reports that solar activity was moderate during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. The Space Weather Prediction Center
expects solar activity to be moderate again today through Wednesday with
a 35% chance for X-class flares. AR3697 has been extremely active. It
generated three X-class flares, one late May 31st, two on June 1st. Each
produced HF radio blackouts. It’s likely do it again. There are 9
numbered sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth this morning. There
were 7 last Monday, 9 the Monday before.
Sunday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was 180,
last Sunday’s was 156. The index is predicted to measure 180 today, 185
Tuesday and 185 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was 170
yesterday. It was 168 last Sunday.
The geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. The SWPC expects the field to
be quiet today, reach minor storm levels tomorrow, then be quiet to
active on Wednesday. The planetary K-index at 8 a.m. this morning was
2.00 indicating quiet conditions.
For the next several days, propagation is expected to be poor to fair
during the day, good at night on 80 to 20; good on 17 and 15, and good
day, poor night on 12 and 10M. At 8 p.m. last night DXmaps.com was
showing lots of north-south E-layer skip in the east on 6 meters. It’s
time to start listening on 6.
