PAMLICO COMMUNICATIONS TEAM (PCT) REPORT
At Saturday’s PCT meeting, Lor W3QA reported progress on the Kershaw
repeater as well as plans for Arapahoe, Bill KR4LO led a seminar on BIG
wire antennas–Sterba Curtain, Bobtail Curtain, Lazy H as well as the
more common and less complex Inverted L–and Wayne KO4OJC did an ad-hoc
show-and-tell on his very successful homebrew Hex Beam for 6 meters.
Lest we forget, Bill threw in a very educational show-and-tell on the
care and feeding (sharpening) of drill bits, yep, drill bits. All are
welcome to these monthly seminars–sometimes technical, sometimes
not–on a variety of topics like digital code plugs, antennas and even
drill bits. Have ideas or desires for future PCT seminars, hands-on
projects? Bring ’em. For more info, contact Bruce Perkins, K4ONC,

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reports that solar activity was high during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. The largest solar event of the period
was a X1 event observed at 05/2221Z. The Prediction Center expects solar
activity to be moderate today through Wednesday with a 50% chance for
M-class flares today, a 25% chance on Tuesday and Wednesday and a very
slight chance for a X-class flare today. There are 7 numbered sunspot
regions on the Sun facing Earth this morning. There were 9 last Monday,
7 the Monday before.
Sunday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was 174.
Last Sunday’s was also 174. The index is predicted to measure 168 today,
166 Tuesday and 164 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was
166 yesterday. It was 165 last Sunday.
The geomagnetic field was quiet Sunday. The SWPC expects conditions to
be quiet to active today today and Wednesday, quiet to minor storm
levels Tuesday. Short radio blackouts at the R1 level are likely. The
planetary K-index at 5 am this morning was 1.33 indicating quiet
conditions.
For the next few days, HF conditions will be basically unchanged from
those we’ve experienced during the past week. Propagation is expected to
be poor on 80 through 20 during the day, good at night. The best
conditions during both day and night are still on the 17 and 15 meter
bands. Ten and 12 should be good day, poor night. Last week, Dick K4JJW
saw short openings on 6 meters mid-mornings off and on. The summer Es
season is fading. We’ve seen better.
For an explanation of the numbers used in our PARSgram, see the
excellent article written by Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA at
