PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
Our next meeting will be at 0900 Saturday, Jun 24th, in the back room of
Brantleys Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park
along the side or out back. We hope to see you all there. For more
information contact Pamlico Amateur Radio Society President Mike Marsh,
K4NLC, 252-636-1257 or mike@marshconsulting.com.
One of these days the whole AMELIA EARHART story will be revealed but
there’s still considerable conjecture about the ending. Much of it has
to do with the radios she and Fred Noonan had and how they used them on
that last and fatal flight in July, 1937. Bill Michne, WM3X, has dug
deep into the radio puzzle and has actually built a working replica of
the Western Electric transmitter on their Lockheed Electra. At our
meeting expect a show and tell about their primary radio and some ideas
on why they failed to establish radio communications or radiolocate the
Coast Guard Cutter Itasca. It was stationed near their Howland Island
destination.
And don’t forget, there’s a chance to draw a $20 Brantleys Restaurant
gift certificate. Come early for breakfast and a chin-wag with your best
friends.
PARS FOX HUNT — Saturday June 24th — LAST CHANCE
Postponed at least twice, you now have another chance to sign up and go
hunting. Mark your calendar for the next PARS fox hunt on Saturday, June
24th. It starts at the Oriental Fire Station on Straight Road soon after
the Saturday PARS breakfast meeting. Now’s the time to sign up
individually or as a team and join in on the fun. No cost to

rgoodwin41@suddenlink.net. It will be a two hour single stage event
with one fox transmitter operating on 146.590 Mhz. Don’t forget that
you need to have your 2M handheld radio pre-programmed to 146.590 and

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reports that solar activity was moderate during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. At 09:56 a.m. a M2.5 flare caused a
minutes long (R1) radio blackout. It was centered over the Mid-Atlantic
Ocean. There are 7 numbered sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth
this morning. There were 7 last Monday, 7 the Monday before. The
Prediction Center expects solar activity to be low today through
Wednesday with a 40% chance for M-class flares and a 10% chance for
X-class flares.
Sunday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was 164.
Last Sunday’s was 154. The index is predicted to measure 160 today, 155
Tuesday and 160 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was 153
yesterday. It was 152 last Sunday.
The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled Sunday. Conditions are
expected to be quiet to active today and Tuesday then quiet to unsettled
on Wednesday. The planetary K-index at 5 am this morning was 2.0
indicating quiet conditions.
For the next few days, HF conditions are expected to range from poor to
fair on 80 through 20 during the day, good at night. The best conditions
during the day and night are likely to be found on the 17 and 15 meter
bands. Twelve and 10 meters should be good during the day, poor at
night. Six meters has been open daily and openings should continue.

excellent article written by Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA at
