SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY

NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period

ending yesterday at 4 p.m. local. The largest solar event was a C5 event

8am yesterday morning. There are 6 numbered sunspot regions on the Sun

facing Earth this morning.  There were 5 last Monday. The Prediction

Center expects solar activity to be moderate today through Wednesday

with for M-class flares expected and a slight chance for an X-class flare.

Yesterday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was

  1. Last Sunday’s was 169. The index is predicted to measure 155 today,

150 tomorrow and 150 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was

167 yesterday. It was 163 last Monday.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field reached minor storm levels yesterday. It

is expected be active and may reach severe storm levels (G3) today. It

is expected to be unsettled Tuesday and then active on Wednesday. The

storms today due to the arrival of a CME late yesterday and a second

today. The estimated Kp-index of 7 reported at 7 a.m. local this morning

indicated stormy geomagnetic conditions.

Last week was a bit bumpy. On Friday there was an X-class flare and two

HF radio blackouts. Then Saturday there was another blackout, this one

caused by an M6-class flare. The CME that resulted is affecting us as I

write this Sunday night and will continue into Monday. That said, the NC

QSO Party was was ending as the strongest storms began. The forty meter

band was solid on Sunday and loaded with signals. Hold onto your hat.

Cycle 25 is getting interesting.

For today, the storms will not be helpful and HF conditions are not

expected to be good. The best conditions are likely to be found on 10

meters during the day, fair on 15 through 12.
