SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was moderate during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 4 p.m. local. There are 6 numbered sunspot regions
on the Sun facing Earth this morning. There were 6 last Monday. The
Prediction Center expects solar activity to be moderate today through
Wednesday with a chance for both M (70%) and X-class (30%) flares. Three
of those 6 sunspot regions have unstable magnetic fields.
NOAA reported that at 7:57 pm EST on Thursday Jan 5th a R3 Radio
Blackout occurred. It was caused by a X1.2 flare. It affected a wide
area on the sunlit side of Earth and left most of the Pacific Ocean,
Australia, and New Zealand without HF communications for up to an hour.
We can expect more of these events as we get deeper into the Solar cycle
and more unstable sunspot regions appear.
Yesterday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was
- Last Sunday’s was 153. The index is predicted to measure 185 today,
185 tomorrow and 180 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was
135 yesterday, up one from last Monday.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled yesterday. It is
expected to be quiet today, and quiet to unsettled both Tuesday and
Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 1.00 reported at 7 a.m. local this
morning indicated quiet geomagnetic conditions.
For today, we can expect fair to good operating conditions on the HF
bands 80 through 15 meters, fair night but good day on 12 and 10.
