PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
Our next meeting will be at 0900 Saturday, November 26th at Brantley’s
Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park along the
side or out back. We hope to see you all there. For more information
contact Pamlico Amateur Radio Society President Mike Marsh, K4NLC,
252-636-1257 or mike@marshconsulting.com.
Expect to hear more about repeaters at the meeting. Arapahoe is running
off the grid… near term plans for connection with the NC4ES DMR
Repeater system… a multi-protocol repeater at Kershaw? Perhaps. Also,
more about life with a C4FM WiresX node: who’s in the room? And of
course, last minute tips on Fox Hunting with those new homemade
measuring tape antennas.
Don’t forget about the monthly drawing for a Brantley’s Restaurant gift
certificate.
BIT BUCKET
* Bill Olah, KR4LO, hosted Fox Hunt Antenna builders and their helpers
at his big shop out by the Red Hill Landing airstrip Saturday morning.
Fox Hunt Coordinator and Chief Instructor Dick Goodwin, K4JJW, was
extremely well prepared with pre-packaged kits of materials and all the
necessary tools to make the build a rounding success. Kathryn Hitchcock,
KO4SVO, led the other 7 or so builders in finishing and testing their
fox-finding rigs by early afternoon. A few others gathered the pieces
they needed to finish theirs on their own. Bill, Dick, and Wayne, KO4OJC
and a couple of others guided, assisted and advised. It turned out to
be quite the learning experience, especially since the days of Heathkit
building are long gone. We expect photos to be on the PARS Web site
sometime this week. Check the What’s Happening Page.
* Lest you forgot, the 2022 PARS Fox Hunt is coming–on Saturday
December 3rd at 10:30 am through 2:15 pm to be exact. It will be a two
hour timed event. The meeting place for mandatory check-in will be at
the Oriental Volunteer Fire Station 19 on Straight Road near the
intersection with NC 55. Then contestants will be dispersed for the
start. After the fox is found, all should be able to find their way back
for hamburgers/hot dogs. If you want to play, contact Dick soon, he
needs to know.
* Those photos of the Arapahoe repeater upgrade to solar power done on
the 12th of November can be found on the Pamlico Communications Team
page on the PARS web site.
* At least seven PARS members made the two hour trek from our County to
Benson for JARSFEST yesterday while Dennis Had, W4USR, made his way over
from Cary; Ron Turner, NA2VY, was up from nearby Dunn; Wayne Beasley,
KO4OJC, from greater Harlow. Off the back of his truck, Air Boss Antenna
Launcher founder Bill Olah was able to divest himself of the last of his
stock. The others after perusing the tables, added to their collection
of possibly needed good stuff and odds and ends. The Pamlico crew
included Bruce Perkins, K4ONC; Mike Marsh, K4NLC; Bill Olah, KR4LO; Bill
Cresswell, K2ONN; Jim Hartmeyer, AI4WL; and Brian Shepard, K4LTE. The
latter, plus Wayne, were captured in a photo that may reach the PARS web
site.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 4 p.m. local. There are 4 numbered sunspot regions
on the Sun facing Earth this morning. There were 4 last Monday. The
Prediction Center expects solar activity to be low today through
Wednesday. M-class flares are possible.
At the noon reading yesterday, the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI) at
Penticton was 119. Last Sunday it was 137. The index is predicted to
measure 120 today and 125 tomorrow and also on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day
trailing average was 133 yesterday, creeping up one from last Sunday.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. It is expected to be
quiet to minor storm level today, quiet to active tomorrow and quiet to
unsettled on Wednesday. High speed solar wind is producing the
geomagnetic activity. The estimated Kp-index of 2 reported at 7 a.m.
local this morning indicated quiet geomagnetic conditions.
We can expect fair to good operating conditions on the HF bands 80
through 20, fair on 17 and 15, fair day and poor night on 12 and 10 meters.
