HAM HELP NEEDED–TWO BIG EVENTS!
***BIKE MS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Bike MS is a 2-day cycling event, this year on September 10 and 11, that
raises funds to support people living with multiple sclerosis. Money
raised through this event funds MS research, programs, services, and
advocacy. Bike MS cyclists enjoy two full days of riding through rural
eastern North Carolina. Each day, cyclists can choose to ride 30, 75, 50
or 100 miles on fully-supported routes. It is big–over a thousand
riders in years past. The ride starts and finishes at Union Point Park
in New Bern. The event and Net Control will be conducted from the New
Bern Convention Center. Help is needed: SAGs who drive the route to
assist riders and report issues and also by hams at rest stops to
provide update information and request logistical or other support.
If you can assist, please contact Bill Sanford, K4VHO at
k4vho.nc@gmail.com or call him at 252-671-7446. You may also register at
https://nmss.galaxydigital.com/need/detail/?need_id=704809. If you wish
SAG duty, https://nmss.galaxydigital.com/need/detail/?need_id=704805
***OL’ FRONT PORCH MUSIC FESTIVAL
PARS has been asked by the organizers of the Ol’ Front Porch Festival to
volunteer and assist with the festival. The festival this year is Friday
and Saturday, September 30th and October 1st in Oriental. Our assignment
would be too assist at each of the 6 closed street locations and to help
with parking at the Oriental United Methodist Church. We will need one
person at each of the street closures and one or two folks at the church
parking lot. The festival runs from 10am to 7pm both days. With
sufficient staffing, we could run three 3 hour shifts both days. We
would ask that you have your HT VHF radio with you to maintain contact
with each other on the N4ONC Oriental repeater. It would also be a good
time to check your simplex frequencies.
If this years festival is anything like last months Croakerfest, it
should be well attended and lots of fun. This is a great opportunity for
PARS to interact with the community and get our club recognized. We can
be flexible with the work schedule but we need folks to volunteer.
Please consider volunteering for this worthwhile event, interact with
fellow PARS members and the community and have fun while doing so.
To signup for this fun and worthwhile activity please call Bruce
Perkins, K4ONC, at 252-626-2730 or email K4ONC@aol.com.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. There are 6 numbered sunspot regions
on the Sun facing Earth this morning. There were 7 last Monday. The
Prediction Center expects solar activity to be low through Wednesday
with a chance for M-class flares.
At noon yesterday, the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was
- Last Sunday it was 117. The index is predicted to measure 124 at
noon today and noon Tuesday and then 122 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day
trailing average was 123 yesterday, down two from last Sunday.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled yesterday. NOAA
expects conditions be quiet today and Tuesday and then quiet to minor
storm levels Wednesday when a CME is expected to pass by Earth. The
estimated Kp-index of 2 reported at 5 a.m. local this morning indicated
quiet conditions.
We can expect fair day and good operating conditions today on 80 to 40
meters, good on 30 to 15 and then fair to poor on 10. Cross your fingers
and hope for an opening on the Magic Band.
