PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
Our next meeting will be at 0900 this Saturday, April 30th at Brantley’s
Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park on the side
or out back. Our meetings are held the last Saturday of each month
except June when the club participates in the annual ARRL Field Day or

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. The largest recent solar event was a
M1 flare observed at 25/0201Z. There are 7 numbered sunspot regions on
the Sun facing Earth this morning, up from 5 last Monday. The sunspot
number is 118.
The Prediction Center expects solar activity to be low today, Tuesday
and Wednesday with a chance for M-class flares and a slight chance for
an X-class flare. At noon yesterday, the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI)
at Penticton was 159. Last Sunday it was 135. The index is predicted to
measure 160 at noon today and also at noon Tuesday and Wednesday. The
SFI 90 day trailing average is 118, up 5 from last Monday.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to active yesterday. NOAA
expects conditions be quiet to unsettled today and then quiet on Tuesday
and Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 1 reported at 5 a.m. local this
morning indicates current quiet geomagnetic conditions.
We can expect poor day and good operating conditions today on 80 to 40
meters, fair day and good nighttime on 30 to 20. Conditions should be
good on 17 and 15, good daytime on 10.
While poor on 40, conditions on the 20 Meter band early yesterday
morning were surprisingly good. On FT-8 just after the gray line, this
operator decoded stations in several countries not often heard including
Norfolk Island, Taiwan, and New Caledonia. The regulars seen were Fiji,
Japan, China, Australia, Indonesia, and New Zealand. Signals were
generally strong on the very active band. And just after 9pm as I write
this, 15 meters is still going strong into the far east. Although the
solar activity NOAA may be reported as “low”, the flux and sunspot
numbers–and our ears–are telling a better story.
