BIT BUCKET
A couple of bits that fell into the bucket recently:
–On the Columbia repeater; apparently the hard line feeding the KX4NC 2
meter antenna on the very tall tower has gone sour. The Columbia
Emergency Repeater Association folks are awaiting a climber to fix the
problem. The need for a climber may also be a factor in the delay in
activating the NC4ES Columbia DMR repeater.
–There also is a bit of a delay in replacing the N4ONC Analog Oriental
repeater with one that is DMR capable. A pre-amplifier may be required
to provide desired receiver sensitivity. We’ll keep you posted.
–And don’t forget, the big 48th Annual RARSfest 2022 is this coming
Saturday, April 16th, at the Jim Graham Building, NC State Fairgrounds
in Raleigh, 8 am to 3 pm. See www.rarsfest.org for info and to preregister.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. There is but one numbered sunspot
region on the Sun facing Earth this morning. There were eight last
Monday! The Prediction Center expects solar activity to be very low
today, Tuesday and Wednesday with a slight chance for C-class flares. On
Sunday the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was 101. (Last
Sunday it was 140.) The index is predicted to measure 98 at noon today,
95 at noon Tuesday and Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average is 113.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field reached severe storm level (G3) yesterday.
The storm was likely caused by a CME that struck Earth on April 8th.
Radio conditions should be calmer today. NOAA expects conditions be
quiet to active today and then quiet on Tuesday and Wednesday. The
estimated Kp-index of 3 reported at 5 a.m. local this morning indicates
quiet geomagnetic conditions.
We can expect poor day and fair operating conditions today on 80 to 40
meters, good night and day on 20, fair on 17 and 15. Conditions will be
poor on 12 and 10. However, checking the bands late yesterday morning,
there appeared to be lots of activity and some good DX on all the HF
bands from 40 through 10 meters. There was some TEP action on 6 meters
in mid-afternoon but most of it was from the Midwest into South America.
