N4ONC REPEATER POWER SYSTEM UPGRADED
Unless you were using the N4ONC Repeater Saturday morning, you would
have not noticed a short outage. Power for the N4ONC 2 Meter and the
KR4LO 70 cm repeaters, temporarily on the grid, was turned off for less
than an hour while the old tired battery, solar panel and controller
were replaced with two new batteries, two new solar panels and a new
controller. Much more robust, the new system should last many years. The
installation was accomplished by Bill Olah, KR4LO, who had researched,
ordered and assembled the necessary components, and Mike Marsh, KR4LO,
Bruce Perkins, K4ONC, Lor Kutchins, W3QA and Jim Hartmeyer, AI4WL.
Photos will be posted on the N4PRS Web site soon.
NORTH CAROLINA QSO PARTY
Our own North Carolina QSO Party is coming up soon, on Sunday February
27th to be exact. The objective for NC Hams is “to activate as many NC
counties as possible and to make contact with everyone”. Lately we have
represented our county pretty well. Last year, Pamlico County hams made
a total of 706 QSOs and Dick Goodwin, K4JJW, doing it solo, placed
second in the new “Expedition” category. This year his station will be a
bonus station with the call, “N4E” and he will be looking for a lot of
contacts. Let’s get on the air to work Dick’s station and a bunch of
others! Here’s what you need to know– The party is from 10 am to 8 pm
on Sunday, Feb 27, 2022. The exchange is call sign and county, “Pamlico”
or “PAM” for us. Signal report is optional. Bands are 80/75 through 2M;
no 160 or WARC bands. Modes include phone, CW, Digital but no FT8/4. The
complete rules are at www.ncqsoparty.org/rules. BTW, the other bonus
stations are N4D, N4U and N4K which all together are worth 200 points
and the suffixes spell….
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was at low levels during the 24 hour
period ending yesterday at 4 p.m. local. There are 3 reported numbered
sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth this morning. The Prediction
Center expects solar activity to be low today through Wednesday with a 1
in 4 chance for M-class flares. On Sunday the observed Solar Flux Index
(SFI) at Penticton was 105. (Last Sunday it was 124.) The index is
predicted to measure 103 at noon today and then 100 tomorrow and 98
Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average is up to 103.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to active yesterday. NOAA
expects conditions to be quiet to unsettled today, quiet Tuesday and
Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 2 reported at 7 a.m. local this
morning indicates quiet geomagnetic conditions.
We can expect fair day and good nighttime operating conditions today on
80 and 40 meters and good on 30 through 15. Conditions will be fair day,
but poor nighttime, on 12 and 10.
