SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY

NOAA reported that solar activity was at low levels during the 24 hour

period ending yesterday at 4 p.m. local. There are 5 reported numbered

sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth this morning. The Prediction

Center expects solar activity to be low today through Wednesday with a

chance for M-class flares. On Sunday the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI)

at Penticton was 124. (Last Sunday it was 130.) The index is predicted

to measure 122 at noon today and then 120 tomorrow and Wednesday. The

SFI 90 day trailing average is up to 100.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to active yesterday. NOAA

expects conditions to be quiet to unsettled today, quiet Tuesday and

Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 1 reported at 7 a.m. local this

morning indicates quiet geomagnetic conditions.

We can expect fair day and good nighttime operating conditions today on

80 and 40 meters and good on 30 through 15. Conditions will be fair day,

but poor nighttime, on 12 and 10. The VHF bands will be quiet, most

contacts are by MS or tropo this morning.

With the SFI 90 day average hitting 100, it’s time to get serious about

getting on 10 meters! For our technicians, it’s a great place to start

out on HF…

ANY ATNOS LATELY?

With the improvement of propagation we should be making contacts with

stations in entities–countries–that we have not worked before, All

Time New Ones (ATNOS).  After you’ve logged them, how about sending me

the particulars and we’ll post your report here. Some of our folks may

be working on getting their first DXCC Certificate. And you old timers,

when you work some hard to get DX please let us know. Sometimes it can

be years before those countries show up again. Thanks, Jim.

MDXC PRESENTATION:”The Rebirth of HF Communications”

Extracted from Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin No. 1552, Tedd Mirgliotta ed.–

The Madison DX Club’s (MDXC) will have a ZOOM pre-

sentation on Tuesday, February 8th. The program will be “The Rebirth of

HF Communications”, presented Paul Denisowski, KO4LZ, Product Management

Engineer for Rohde & Schwarz.

For February, they will have a program on the future of HF communi-

cations. Morse Code is no longer required for radio operators in the

Navy. Most Nation sponsored Shortwave Broadcasters (such as the VOA)

have suspended their HF broadcasts. So will equipment manufacturers

abandon the HF spectrum? Where will this leave amateur radio and DXing?

Join us for their February program and find out what the future holds.

The MDXC ZOOM host will be Kevin Shea, N9JKP, that will be online from

0000 UTC to socialize before the business meeting begins and to provide

time to work through any technical issues. A brief business meeting will

begin at 0030 UTC. The program begins at 0100 UTC, sharp. All interested

hams are welcome.
