PRESIDENT’S SOAPBOX
As you are probably aware, this Saturday and Sunday is the annual
Field Day event. Since PARS will not be having the traditional
temporary station set up as in the past, I encourage as many of our
members as possible to get on the air from their home stations. If you
are running one transmitter and operating using commercial power, your
part of the exchange will be, “1 Delta, North Carolina,” and “1D NC” on
CW. When you submit your log electronically (very easy to do) be sure
to designate your club as “Pamlico Amateur Radio Society, Ltd.” so we
can get an aggregate score for the club. Using the club callsign N4PRS,
my station will be available for the duration of the event for any club
member to operate. This includes Technicians who want to try HF single
sideband operation. It’s perfectly legal, since there will be an Extra
Class control operator present at all times. _…_ Since we will not
be busy setting up for Field Day Saturday morning, I will hold a monthly
PARS meeting at 9:00 AM that day, using our net format on the Oriental
repeater. I also encourage our members to monitor the repeater during

BIT BUCKET:
A couple of new items are on the PARS Web site (N4PRS.ORG). Paul has
posted, courtesy of Gordon Allison, W7JVM, the classic speed contest
between CW and texting featured on the Jay Leno Show. Look for it at
top of the “Doodles” page. And then there is Sam/Dave’s (KD2T) quest for
confirmation of a long ago contact with Bill Erhardt at McMurdo Station
(KC4AAA) back in 1993. It’s to be found in the “Log Book”… Where else
would you find it?
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hours
ending yesterday at 5 pm local. There are mp sunspot regions on the Sun
facing Earth this morning. According to the Space Weather Prediction
Center activity will continue to be very low through Wednesday. On
Sunday the reported Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was 68. The
index is predicted to register 68 today, Tuesday and Wednesday. The SFI
90 day trailing average is 70.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. It is expected to be
quiet through Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 1 reported at 5 a.m.
local this morning indicates we are currently experiencing quiet conditions.
We can expect fair daytime and good nighttime operating conditions on 80
and 40 meters. Expect poor conditions on the higher HF bands.
Last Monday evening, 191 folks checked in to the 6M “Buzzard Net” run by
Ed, KE4EE, out of La Grange, GA. Reportedly 92 of those check in’s were
by E layer skip. The band was open first to the northeast states and
then moved to the Midwest ending with the last contact in Kansas nearly
4 hours after the net started.
Lots of folks were looking for Europe on 6 Meters this past weekend but
few appeared to have made the trip. That said, there was a lot of single
and double hop Es activity stateside on FT8 and even some sideband on
Sunday.
