PRESIDENT’S SOAPBOX
You may have heard recently that a California bureaucrat made a
statement that the state had no further need for amateur radio
assistance during emergencies as a result of advances in communications
technology. Unfortunately, during a couple of subsequent wild fires the
advanced communications technology went up in smoke. Fortunately the
local ham community was able to provide communications services to,
from, and for those in the affected area. Congratulations on a job well
done! _…_ This weekend’s nor’easter was a good opportunity to test
the durability of my budding antenna farm. I have a dipole in the
trees, and raised a 25 foot section of a vertical held up by guy ropes.
As of Sunday evening at this writing both antennas were still up in the
air. The vertical is going higher but the plan is to be able to lower
it for the big storms. The lower section appears to be sufficiently
robust to be able to do that. …_._ de WM3X, Bill Michne,

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hours
ending yesterday at 4 pm local. There are no sunspot regions on the Sun
facing Earth this morning. This is our 241st morning this year without.
Solar activity will continue to be very low according to the Space
Weather Prediction Center. On Sunday, the reported Solar Flux Index
(SFI) at Penticton was 70. The index is predicted to register 70 today
through Wednesday. The more important SFI 90 day trailing average is 68.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. It is expected to be
quiet today, quiet to unsettled Tuesday and then unsettled to active on
Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 0 at 7 a.m. local this morning
indicates we are currently experiencing very quiet conditions.

We can expect fair daytime and good nighttime operating conditions on 80
and 40 meters for the next few days. Poor conditions will continue on
the higher bands. It is time to start watching the VHF bands for
activity as the winter Es season is about to begin.

article written by Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA at
