PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
Our next meeting will be at 0900 this Saturday, Aug 31st at Brantley’s
Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park on the side
or out back. Our meetings are held the last Saturday of each month
except June when the club participates in the annual ARRL Field Day or
when in conflict with a major holiday. We hope to see you all there. For

KUDO’s to Mike, K4NLC, and Bruce, K4ONC, for running a superb ARES net
and SET exercise last week. I was particularly impressed by the
acoustic message transfers using fldigi software. This could prove to
be a tremendously valuable resource to us in time of need, but hey,
that’s why they did it… _…_ This Saturday is the monthly PARS
meeting, to be followed on Sunday by September 1st. We are now in high
season for hurricanes. Are your generators serviced and operational?
Are all your batteries charged? Do you have a plan to protect your
property? The action is picking up in the usual places and bears

If you have not already taken a look at the PARS web page www.n4prs.org,
I suggest that you do so. Our webmaster Paul, K4MMB, has been busy
updating the pages with current photos of PARS related events and road
trips. Look under the tabs “Logbook” and “What’s Happening” “Page 2” for
the latest photos from our special event station at the Dragon Boat
Races; visit with Don Smith, KJ4RB, in Pink Hill; our own Glenn Everest,
N4LV, and his connection to Mt. Everest; and much more. I think you will
find our web page very informative and interesting. Paul has put a great
deal of time and effort into the web page to make it timely and fun to
view. Of course, Paul is always open for suggestions on how to make it
even better. And, if you have items of club interest/photos, please pass

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hours
ending yesterday at 5 pm local. There are no sunspot regions on the sun
facing earth this morning. Activity will continue to be very low
according to the Space Weather Prediction Center. On Sunday, the
reported Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was 66. The index is
predicted to register 67 today through Wednesday. The SFI 90 day
trailing average is 68.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. It is expected to be
quiet to active today and Tuesday then quiet to unsettled on Wednesday.
The estimated Kp-index of 1 at 5 a.m. local this morning indicates we
are currently experiencing quiet conditions.
We can expect fair daytime and good nighttime operating conditions on 80
and 40 meters for the next few days. Poor conditions will continue on
the higher bands. As for six meters, as they say, “Elvis has left the
building.”

HIRAM PERCY MAXIM BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION — STARTS FRIDAY!
Marking the 150th anniversary of Hiram Percy Maxim’s birth, the ARRL is
holding a 9 day operating event starting 0000 UTC August 31st (8 pm this
Friday). Open to all hams, the goal is to contact as many ARRL members
as possible, all being authorized to append /150 to their call sign.
