PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
Our next meeting will be at 0900 this Saturday, May 25th at Brantley's Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park on the side or out back. Our meetings are held the last Saturday of each month except June when the club participates in the annual ARRL Field Day or when in conflict with a major holiday. We hope to see you all there. For more information contact Pamlico Amateur Radio Society President Bill Michne, WM3X, 249-1175 or drmichne73@gmail.com.
This Saturday we will welcome our special guest, ARRL Roanoke Division Vice Director, Bill Morine, N2COP. This a meeting you will not want to miss.
PRESIDENT'S SOAPBOX
There's been some talk lately about the waning importance of amateur radio in emergency communication in times of disaster. But that is true only if the civil communications infrastructure remains intact, which, of course, to a greater or lesser extent, it will not. With that in mind, ARRL is promoting modern amateur radio practice as a serious resource in these emergencies. In order to demonstrate its capabilities, on Thursday, May 23, during a joint meeting with Red Cross and FEMA officials in Baltimore, amateur radio operators at portable stations from New England to the Carolinas will deliver messages to W1AW, which will then coordinate and deliver the information to officials attending the joint FEMA-Red Cross meeting. Messaging will be handled using digital modes, which can allow for the transmission of images as well as text, as a showcase for the full range of modern Amateur Radio technology. I am confident that the demonstration will be both successful and impressive. _..._ Hard to believe that the May PARS meeting is this Saturday. We will discuss final arrangements for Field Day (if you want a T-shirt or hat you'll have to order it yourself as I have already placed the club order), and our special guest will be Bill Morine, N2COP, Vice Director of the Roanoke Division. Hope to see you all there. ..._._ de WM3X, Bill Michne, 252-249-1175, drmichne73@gmail.com.
HURRICANE COMMUNITY FORUM
PARS is sponsoring a Hurricane Community Forum at the Oriental Town Hall on Wednesday June 12 from 6 to 8 pm. Conducted by the National Weather Service office in Newport, the class is free and open to everyone. The goal is to provide forecasts for the hurricane season, information on hurricane preparedness, and to answer questions. This class will benefit newcomers and those that have gone through hurricanes alike. For more information on this class you can go to weather.gov/mhx or call the NWS at 252-223-5122 ext 5. You can also call our PARS coordinator, Bruce Perkins, K4ONC, at 252-249-6015 or k4onc@aol.com.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hours ending yesterday at 5 pm local. There are no sunspot regions on the sun facing earth this morning. Activity will be very low through Wednesday according to the Space Weather Prediction Center. On Sunday, the reported Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was 68. The index is predicted to remain 68 today through Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average is 72.
The Earth's geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. It is expected to be quiet to unsettled through Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 1 at 5 a.m. local this morning indicates current quiet conditions.
We can expect good daytime and good nighttime operating conditions on 80 and 40 meters for the next few days. Fair conditions are expected on 30 and 20 meters. Poor conditions will continue on the higher bands. The six meter band was active from the Midwest to the west Sunday evening with lots of Es reported. The Southeast was quiet. As it has been for over a year now, nearly all contacts are FT8.
