PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
Our next meeting will be at 0900 this Saturday, Oct 26th, at Brantley’s
Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park on the side or
out back. Our meetings are held the last Saturday of each month except June
when the club participates in the annual ARRL Field Day or when in conflict
with a major holiday. At this meeting we will ELECT OFFICERS to serve during
the new year starting in January. We hope to see you all there. For more

SECOND AMATEUR RADIO FLEA MARKET THIS SATURDAY
Bring all that stuff related to Ham radio that you want to part with
to the meeting on Saturday. Not really a Hamfest but a place to sell, give
away, dump items you no longer want or need. We did it in September and
PARS is doing it again in October. There should be some room on tables
inside but if you have large heavy items, like transceivers or power
supplies, leave them in your trunk or on your tailgate. Free stuff might
include a DVD player and an UPS and even, possibly, a reasonably priced

VOLUNTEER EXAMINERS WITH EXTRA CLASS LICENSE NEEDED FOR TESTING SESSION
Jamie King KJ4JK, is in need of one or two volunteer examiners for the test
session 6:00 PM Thursday, Oct 24th, at the Southeast Pamlico VFD
station on Straight Road. He especially needs VE’s holding an Extra Class
License. If you can make it, please let Jamie know at 249-1549 or
kj4jk1@gmail.com. A short review for current students will precede the exam
session and start at 1730. If you are independently studying for a test and
wish to take it at this session, let Jamie know so the materials will be on
hand.
DOLLARS DONATED FOR A NEW ARES RADIO AT THE EOC
Thanks to all who have thoughtfully contributed to the purchase of the new
PARS/ARES transceiver. To date, the club has received $240.00 in donations,
almost half of the purchase price. Bill Cresswell K2ONN, on behalf of the
club, obtained the Yaesu FT-8900R four band FM transceiver for use at the
Pamlico Emergency Operations Center. Bill Olah KR4LO then programmed and
tested it making it ready for operation as part of the EOC “go-package”. If
you want to help defray the cost you can send your check to the Pamlico
Amateur Radio Society, PO. Box 272, Oriental, NC 28571 or bring it to the
next meeting. On the memo line write “ARES Radio”. Again, thanks to all.

wish to run for re-election. To remain viable, PARS needs folks willing to
serve as officers. You will have plenty of help. Please consider serving.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was at low levels for the 24 hours
ending Sunday night at 8 pm local. The largest solar event of the period was
a C2 flare observed at 20/0840Z. There are currently 6 numbered
sunspot regions on the disk. The Sunspot count is 117, down from the 125 we
saw last Monday. The number was 143 only 12 hours ago and even higher during
the past week. The Solar Flux was 133 this morning just up from 129 reported
last week. It is expected to drop to 120 by Wednesday. NOAA predicts solar
activity will be mostly low through Wednesday with a chance for M-class
flares (25 %).
Could we be experiencing the end of a week long second high for Sunspot
Cycle 24, the “double peak” some of the pundits forecast for Fall 2013?
Looks like it!
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet over the weekend. The estimated
planetary K-index at 5 am local on 21 October was 0. Geomagnetic conditions
are expected to be quiet to unsettled today and on Tuesday and back to
quiet on Wednesday. Solar wind flowing from a coronal hole could reach Earth
on Oct. 21-22.
RF propagation should be good on the 15, 17, 20 and 30 Meter bands, also
good on 40 at night. Now’s the time to work ’em if you can. The CQWW DX
SSB Contest brings ’em out!
DX CHALLENGES FOR THE WEEK
CYPRUS, 5B. Tony, RT9T is QRV as 5B4ALB from Pachyammos, IOTA
AS-004, until November 4. QSL direct to home call. He was strong on 10
Meters Sunday but with a big pile-up. Good luck!
AH0, MARIANA ISLANDS. Operators Kuniyoshi/7L1FPU (W1FPU), Moto/JE1NDE
(W1NDE), Naoyuki/JK1FNL (NA8O), Matthew/K0BBC and Hiroyuki/JG7PSJ
(KW2X) will be active as AH0BT during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October
26-27th) as a Multi-2 entry. QSL via 7L1FPU, direct, by the Bureau
or LoTW.
B9, CHINA (ZONE 23). Dale, BA4TB, and a team of others will be active as
B9/BY9GA from Zone 23 (Gansu) between October 20-28th. Activity will
include the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 26-27th). Also, look for BJ9TA
to be active on 6m and up (EME included) during same dates. QSL via their
operator’s instruction.
